Vehicle Description
1968 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible
From boulevard cruising to backroad bruising, it's hard to find a
better all-around performer than a Corvette. And once Chevrolet
firmly established the brand as a global tour de force, it began a
constant quest to achieve increasing levels of performance and
desirability. No generation of Corvette emphasizes the transition
from muscle car to all-out sports car better than the C3.
This beautiful Corvette with a very nice color combination, graces
our halls here at Classic Auto Mall. It stands out as something
very much original 1968 looking and has a later model engine with
the added benefit of fuel injection. And those nice chrome bumpers
and black rockers just adds to the exterior Corvette mystique. And
it's a convertible, what more could you want?
Exterior
A code 978 nice International Blue respray in the correct color
match shows very nicely with no checks or cracks, just smooth deep
blue paint. The sculpted body is highlighted on the front quarters
by shark-like gill venting with some chrome accenting. The hidden
headlights with new vacuum pods, grille, and a spear like hood bump
are long and perfect. A black rocker cover with a strip of
stainless accenting above is reserved for the rockers. On the back
the curvaceous rear quarters frame the deep dish Chevrolet rally
wheels and like new Hankook blackwall tires. The rear has a split
chromed bumper, roll pan tailpipes with bezels, and 4 round
pristine tail lights. Note the black cloth convertible top is in
fine shape with a clear plastic rear window. The look and stance of
this year is quickly becoming one of my favs, along with the
rounded look of the 76-77 versions.
Interior
Black leather and vinyl in this 1968 model year covers the buckets,
door panels, and dash. This creates a beautiful combination to the
exterior blue. No fading and very slight wear is seen on the
leather drivers chair, however overall it presents in very good
condition. Center console is wrapped in black and uses aluminum
highlighting as well as some black and a large chrome shift knob to
set everything off. Also, a black leather wrapped steering wheel
adds a nice touch to the overall interior. Carpeting throughout
appears as like new in black. Nice deep inset gauges for the driver
as well as the cluster of 5 in the center keep you up to date of
the car's vitals. We note an added AM/FM/Bluetooth stereo and 3
speakers in the rear storage area.
Drivetrain
A non-original 350ci V8 mill is backed by a 4-speed Muncie manual
transmission circa 1964/65, residing in an overall clean engine
bay. Power steering is an extra added option. FiTech provides the
electronic fuel injection and is perched atop a Winters foundry
aluminum intake manifold. The rear axle weighs in at 3.36 and
Positraction with an AM stamping code. An HEI tach-drive
distributor lights the fire and an aluminum radiator is on to keep
things cool with this consignor stated 400hp shark.
Undercarriage
A gander underside reveals 4-wheel disc brakes, a good condition
but patinaed frame and floor construction as well as a clean
suspension. Suspension is fully independent for the front and rear
with the front being coil spring and the rear being a frame
anchored differential with transverse leaf springs. Exhaust is
nice, clean and rust free.
Drive-Ability
I liken this test drive to driving a piece of fine art sculpture,
and it performed as it should for the drivetrain. Endless power
from the injected 350, bias free braking and great handling all
wrapped up in a fun in the sun package. The only issue that crept
up during our drive is we noticed the odometer is
non-functional.
Just a very nice looking, well sorted 1st year C-3 Stingray that
runs and sounds better than it did in '68. If you are in the market
for a well-equipped early Corvette that's ready to cruise, do not
hesitate on this one...When the shark bites....!
