It started with a simple idea: a few car chassis fitted with
hand-built beds to help carry materials around a booming car
factory. Before long, millions of Chevrolet pickups were woven into
the fabric of a fast-growing country. Chevy trucks tackled the
toughest jobs on farms and in the fields; hauled tools and lumber
to the burgeoning suburbs; and carried families and friends into
and out of the wilds for well-earned vacations.
For consignment, a 1985 Chevrolet pickup truck that has been the
beneficiary of repaint 25 years ago, a spicy 355ci small block V8
mill, overdrive transmission with a shift kit, some snappy dark
blue paint, and a clean interior. Let's just say have a look and
I'm sure you will be impressed as I was, and definitely had a
yearning to look into this truck deeper.
Exterior
Classic Chevrolet trucks from the 80's are quite the hot item these
days. Any classic truck is for that matter, but truth be told, it's
the boxy retro look that people are after, and this truck is the
epitome of that design. A flat silver and chrome eggcrate grille
leads us off with its stacked inset headlights and parking light
setup on either side, and on this example a gold bow tie in the
center. Shiny and mirror-like would best describe the bumper below.
This beautiful setup fronts straight steel, with well minded gaps,
all bathed in a 25 year old application of dark blue. A few flaws
are noted in the paint, those being some fisheyes, hazing and
inclusions on the hood. Good chrome attachments are on the doors in
the form of mirrors, and handles. The glass surrounds remain shiny
and bright and accent the tinted glass splendidly. The long bed
version is covered with a black tonneau rib reinforced bed cover,
and underneath is the rubber lined bed looking good. 18 inch
American Racing Torque Thrust wheels present with polished lips and
graphite gray spokes and are wrapped with like new rubber.
Interior
A swing of the doors reveals an intricate mix of dark and light
tans molded vinyl with some carpeted area on the bottoms, and many
differing panels to make up just the doors. These panels show some
light wear but remain looking good. Inside is a gray moose print,
tree, and snowflake seat cover is over the bench seat stretching
from door to door. As for the condition of the underlying
upholstery, we didn't take the time to remove the cover which is
well attached, but peeking under the side reveals clean tan
broadcloth. In front is the original factory configured tan and
brown molded vinyl dash with a black instrument cluster using the
square and rectangle design of the mid 1980's. Also within the dash
is a JVC AM/FM/Cassette player. Gold carpet is on the floors and
remains clean as there are molded rubber diamond plate pattern
floor tray mats. Above is a tight felted headliner.
Drivetrain
Under the hood is simply put: "eye candy" in the form of a blue
blocked consigner stated 355ci V8. This mill sports a mild
performance camshaft, an Edelbrock intake and a QuickFuel750cfm
4-barrel carburetor. A rebuilt 700R4 4-speed automatic transmission
with a shift kit and heavy duty clutches is on back along with a
10-bolt, 4.11 posi-rear axle. Also seen are silver headers and
totally polished bolt ons abounding throughout the clean bay. Smoke
'em if you got 'em!
Undercarriage
Not to be outdone by the topside, the undercarriage appears to have
never seen bad weather, and is also fully restored in black with
the only rust being a light surface coating on the usual suspects.
Straight rust free steel featuring independent coil springs on
front and the rear has leaf springs give us thesmooth truck ride.
Power disc brakes are on front, and power drums for the rear for
the whoah factor and a shiny Turbo mufflered exhaust system is fed
by headers and ends with chromed dual tips under the rear
bumper.
Drive-Ability
Firing this truck up, you will be met with a surprising roar as you
soak in the plush seating and well done interior. It certainly
accelerates smoothly and quickly, stops on a dime and cruises very
nicely to boot. All functions were working just perfectly save for
the driver's power lock not functioning and the air conditioning
blowing warm.
A fine overall restoration job and showing very wellfor the
exterior and interior. The rebuilt engine is all blinged out, and
the engine bay is simply...well fabulous! I could use my pickup
line right now, but I digress, and will just say a classic truck
will not get much better in our Hallowed Halls than this baby.
Ready to haul anything, even some serious ass!
