For Sale: 1964 Ford Galaxie in Morgantown, Pennsylvania

Vehicle Description

1964 Ford Galaxie 500 Fastback

For those of you who used their formative years to educate and mostly entertain themselves with the boob tube, you were probably catching an episode or two of Andy of Mayberry. A number of awesome cars were featured in the Andy Griffith Show over its nine year run, but Griffith's squad cars were always Ford Galaxie 500 sedans. Fords were increasingly featured as the show reached its later years, undoubtedly because of a sponsorship from the Ford Motor Company.

For consignment, a 1964 Galaxie 500 that has been redone just short of a full blown restoration. All systems have been gone through including a rebuild for the engine and transmission, but still retaining its original interior with the exception of the carpet. A Pennsylvania car its whole life, spending much of its time with the original owner, who's tenure stretched from 1964 until his passing in 2010. It now presents in above average condition with a few faults, but mostly original in all its vanilla optioned splendor.

Exterior
Raven Black, in a respray covers straight steel panels, and good gaps. The metal is not perfect as we can note some light spray of the paint along with orange peel in a few of the panels. Otherwise paint is shiny and deep and is highlighted by a nice badged trim spear running from front to back in the mid-section, tastefully breaking up the black. A red, blue and orange flourish pinstripe is seen just under the door handles and red steel wheels with polished jet age center hubcaps wrapped in thin whitewalls gives this car a somewhat unassuming look. Dual front headlights within a well preserved egg crate grille has a nice badge in the center. The front bumper is very nice. As we move to the rear, round jet engine style taillights have beautiful bezels and 8 spikes that come to the center and form a circle around a backup light. On the rear below the trunk a nice brushed aluminum filler panel bridges the gap between the tail lights, and below is a nicely preserved rear bumper. Not to be forgotten is the sweeping fastback roofline that perfects the look of motion even when standing still.

Interior
With a swing of the doors we greet several silver blue vinyl covered surfaces, all original and all in good condition. The front split bench is silver blue tuck and roll inserts and smooth light silver blue bolsters and some bright silver piping racing around the border of the two. The rear bench copies this style. A very clean and shiny original dash with its factory padded topper and steering wheel are noted and the instrument cluster has a spaceship styling to it, and we see an original radio in the center. Newer blue carpet floods the floors and a nice tight headliner, again original, is above all the passenger compartment. Bringing attention briefly to the trunk, it has its original vinyl liner, cardboard sides, optional fender skirts, and a spare and jack neatly tucked away in the front of the trunk.

Drivetrain
Clean original with some nice light patina is seen on the surfaces under the hood, including the rebuilt 352ci V8 which pumps out 250 horses. This is complete with blue valve covers and a single Autolite 2-barrel carb with a blue air cleaner cover atop. A Cruise-O-Matic 3-speed automatic that has been rebuilt is bolted to the rear of the mill. Way back is a 9-inch 3.00 conventional axle.

Undercarriage
Some surface rust for the usual suspects, but the car maintains structural integrity with rust free frame, rockers and floor pans. Independent coil springs for the front, and leaf springs for the rear suspensions, as well as drum brakes are all around. A dual exhaust is seen and has been fitted with Cherrybomb mufflers.

Drive-Ability
As expected from a car in this condition, she fired right up, and with a press of the gas, took off smoothly. This car is a great large cruiser, smooth ride, and no creaking or squeaking when turning the corners. Drives like a well-kept car with the only fault appearing is the brake lights not illuminating.

With just a few minor frowns on the exterior, the paint remains nice, chrome is all good, and the interior is 99% original from 1964. Not the most powerful or unusual optioned car, but very respectable in overall presentation but a great looker that would make good old Andy and Barney jealous.
