Vehicle Description
1980 Chevrolet Camaro Berlinetta
With current technology and the Internet, teleconferences and video
conferences are commonplace. However, in 1966 when Chevy scheduled
the launch and announcement of the Camaro, (Panther), the
communication technology was a bit more primitive. On June 28th,
more than 200 journalists and the Chevy PR team assembled at hotels
in fourteen American cities to hear the conference call
announcement. It was the first large-scale teleconference requiring
more than 100 Bell technicians on-hand to ensure success.
For consignment, a 1980 Chevrolet Camaro in Berlinetta trim. This
one is in fair condition on the exterior with some dents and dings,
mixed with slight rust in certain areas, a replacement engine, and
a custom color changed interior. Fun fact, Chevrolet produced the
Berlinetta from 1979 to 1986 and the Berlinetta model was marketed
as having a luxury focus, through interior features and softer
suspension and was actually marketed more toward women.
Due to modifications of the emissions control devices installed by
the manufacturer, please check your local, state, and federal laws
to determine if this vehicle is applicable for use on public
highways in your area.*
Exterior
This generation of the Camaro has thrown out the conventional
chrome bumper and now gone with the crash test neoprene V shaped
front end, and it is neoprene even surrounding the round single
headlights on either side. Turn signals are also inset and a black
sloped forward grille with the badge in the center. The long hood
and front quarters make their way back to the cabin and are bathed
in black primer, just like the remainder of the car. Long doors
allow for easy access, and the rear bench passengers are treated to
plenty of light and scenery with the gently sloping rear glass that
is slightly darkened by the addition of louvers, which melts into
the trunk deck that ends in a seamless spoiler and more neoprene
for the rear bumper. Of note, the louvers aren't attached to the
rear glass, they're simply set on. Taillights wrap around the rear
quarter, and we have a racy design fer sur! An uneven application
of black primer is noted on the body and has been oversprayed onto
the glass, emblems, bezels and lights. A few areas of body fill
repairs are noted on the lower panels with some areas of invasive
rust poking through. 14" Cragar wheels are on the 4's and have been
treated to the same primer job. A shout out to the trunk which is
filled with spare parts for this ride. Also, our consignor has
included a pair of Cragar drag wheels.
Interior
As we swing open one of those long doors we see bare steel where
the door panels once hung. Power windows and locks have been
optioned on and the black vinyl armrest is still attached, and the
original tan door panels are included with the purchase. Tan cloth
and vinyl bucket seats grace the front and have been partially
sprayed in black, but we see plenty of the tan showing through in
some areas and completely void of the black in others. A small
center console sits between these buckets from the middle of the
rear bench, with wide tuck and roll black vinyl. The console has a
lockable armrest/glove box, and as it moves forward a pair of cup
holders. A B&M shifter sits within its own consolette and is
topped with a T-handle shift knob. Above is a bowtie emblem
covering the hole where the radio once lived. Instruments are
embedded in a black dash panel and are all round but are hard to
read due to black paint overspray from the interior color change.
Above is a painted black cracked dash pad and more paint overspray
is on the windshield. The original steering wheel is on and painted
black, all the while being wrapped by a camo padded rim cover.
Black carpeting is covering the floors, and above is bare steel
where the headliner once hung.
Drivetrain
Under the hood sits a consignor stated GM Goodwrench 350ci V8. It
is topped with a 4-barrel carburetor and has a TH350 3-speed
automatic transmission on back. A 10-bolt rear axle spins the
tires. All is looking solid under this hood but suffering from a
healthy coating of dust and patina.
Undercarriage
Up on the lift the undercarriage shows some surface rust, patina
and road dirt covered steel and a few drips from the pumpkin. A few
areas of repair are noted in the rear inner wheel houses as well as
the front flooring being replaced. Otherwise, things are solid,
including the unibody, which tends to be a point of invasive rust
on these cars. Power disc brakes are upfront, and power drums on
back. Also, a single exhaust system with no muffler ends just in
front of the rear axle.
Drive-Ability
Starts right up and on the track it has nice acceleration, good
braking, but the handling left something to be desired as the front
shocks are worn and we noted a popping noise from the front end
when traversing grade changes. Also, the power locks and power
windows did not function and the paint on the seats has a tendency
to wear off on your clothes. Definitely in need of some TLC
here.
Despite some of its shortcomings, some TLC will bring it back to
snuff, mostly on the cosmetic end particularly on the interior of
this vehicle. It is worth it as this generation is some of the
best-looking Camaros around.
