This Mk1 Volkswagen Cabriolet is an honest and largely original example of the iconic open-top hatchback, with an appealing Boutique Edition factory specification. Having been well-maintained during my two-year ownership, it is now ready to be enjoyed as a handsome addition to any collection of modern classics, and a fun boulevard cruiser.
This ‘Boutique Edition’ Cabriolet is finished in Alpine White with a matching white convertible roof and body trims, while the cabin is trimmed in white leather with a black dashboard and carpets.
Under the hood is a naturally aspirated 1.8-litre inline-four, delivering around 110bhp to the front wheels through a five-speed manual transmission. It rides on a set of white-painted 14-inch ‘Snowflake’ alloy wheels shod in Arroyo tires on the front axle, and Landsail tires on the rear axle.
A more modern JVC radio/CD player with Bluetooth connectivity has been fitted in the cabin, as well as uprated speakers which have been fitted in the door cards.
The car will be sold with its original document wallet with MSRP window sticker, the original operator’s manual, a stamped maintenance booklet, a 1989 VW warranty booklet, and a selection of maintenance receipts from the owner’s two years with the car.
This Mk1 Volkswagen Cabriolet was sold new by Nick Alexander Imports of Los Angeles, and has been with its current and third owner for two years.
Since it was in storage for at least three years, this Cabriolet’s engine and fuel line has been extensively restored. The latest service was carried out during July 2022 at 51,538 miles by the Euro Car Clinic. The work comprised of an engine oil and filter change, a multi-point inspection, a fuel injection system diagnosis and replacement of related components, a leaking vacuum repair on the HVAC circuit, a lambda setting adjustment to factory specification, a replacement of the fuel injection relay, and a passed smog test.
Prior to this, the car was serviced in June 2022 which included a replacement fuel accumulator, a repair of the vacuum hose, a check and adjustment of the fuel injection system, and a replacement of the top lift cylinder and rear top strut bracket for the convertible soft-top roof.
