Vehicle Description
One of the most charismatic muscle cars of the late 60s, the Shelby
GT500 transformed the standard Ford Mustang into a high-spec,
high-performance Grand Tourer thanks to Shelby's skunkworks
shoehorning the massive 428 Police Interceptor V8 between the shock
towers. While already a formidable machine, Shelby took the GT500
concept even further by introducing the GT500 KR (for "King of the
Road"). The KR used Ford's mighty 428 Cobra Jet engine,
conservatively rated at 335hp, but in reality thumping out over 400
horsepower and 440 ft-lbs of torque, resulting in the fastest and
most powerful Mustang of its day and a legendary collector car
coveted by enthusiasts worldwide. Fast forward to 2008, and Ford -
reunited with Shelby - introduced a new high-performance Mustang on
the S-197 platform to celebrate the iconic GT500 KR's 40th
anniversary. As it had in the 1960s, Shelby used the "standard"
GT500 as a basis - which in itself was no slouch thanks to a
supercharged 5.4-liter V8, six-speed 'box, and uprated chassis. For
the KR, Shelby American tweaked the V8 with new intake and exhaust
systems, fitted specially developed strut tower bracing, new Ford
Racing dampers and springs, 3.73:1 gearing, and a carbon fiber
hood. In addition, the car got unique forged alloy Alcoa 18-inch
wheels, revised front aero to minimize lift, massive Brembo brakes,
and special 40th anniversary badging. When all was said and done,
the Ford Shelby Mustang GT500 KR hit the streets with 540
horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque and offered considerably
improved handling and stability over the standard GT500. Much more
than just a badge-engineered special edition, the GT500 KR is a
genuine joint effort between Ford SVT and Shelby American. Each
GT500 was assembled in Ford's Romeo, Michigan plant and then
shipped to Las Vegas for conversion to KR spec by Shelby American's
team. The package added a whopping $35,000 over a standard GT500,
and Ford limited production to approximately 1000 cars in 2008,
with 712 non-anniversary KRs in 2009. Naturally, collector interest
was high, and many snatched up the new KR to park alongside their
original '68s. This 2008 GT500 KR 40th Anniversary is an incredible
example of this highly collectible Mustang, offered in time-capsule
condition with just 24 miles from new. This one-owner GT500 KR is
undoubtedly one of the lowest mileage examples available, in
factory-fresh condition and including a matching, limited-edition
Shelby GT500 KR Stratocaster - one of 100 made and only sold only
through select Ford dealers. This car has been carefully stored
since day one and is sold with all pre-delivery items intact,
including carpet cover, plastic seat covers, steering wheel cover,
and other protective films. This car is finished in black with
satin black Le Mans stripes over black leather upholstery, and the
Ford window sticker lists all standard items for a GT500, optional
DVD Navigation, and GT500 premium trim. A separate Shelby American
sticker tallies up the remaining options and KR package components.
As expected of a car with just 24 miles, it is offered in like-new
condition benefitting from careful long-term storage. The paint and
bodywork are superb, the wheels unmarked, and it still rides on its
original Goodyear Eagle F1 tires. The seats, door cards, carpets,
and interior fittings are superb, showing virtually no signs of
use. Service records are naturally limited; however, a new
Ford-supplied battery was recently fitted. Accompanying
documentation includes a copy of the MSO, original purchase
documents, brochures, and window stickers. It also has books, a
front license bracket, two spare key fobs, a brake cooling kit, and
a car cover. The Fender Stratocaster Guitar includes accompanying
documentation and remains in superb, unplayed condition in its
original hardshell case and shipping box. The Shelby GT500 KR
embodies the classic muscle car formula, with humble underpinnings
and thrilling V8 performance. But unlike muscle cars of the 60s,
this Shelby can hold its own when the road gets twisty, thanks to
its carefully developed suspension and brake components. Considered
an instant collectible on its debut, the GT500 KR 40th Anniversary
is a welcome addition to any collection of American muscle and
youngtimer classics, and this outstanding example represents an
exceedingly rare opportunity to acquire an essentially new example.
