Vehicle Description
2002 Chevrolet Camaro Z28/SS 35th Anniversary Convertible
History is full of rivalries between two strong competitors like
Coke vs. Pepsi, AT&T vs. MCI, Nike vs. Reebok, and Bill Gates
vs. Steve Jobs. In almost every case, the competition and the drive
to outdo a rival resulted in the production of superior products by
both companies and benefited the consumer with high quality and
lower prices. The rivalry between the Chevrolet Camaro and the Ford
Mustang has run for more than a half a century with similar
results. Both vehicles, rear-wheel-drive, 2 plus 2 American sports
coupes began their battle for customers starting in the 1960s, and
each has had its ups and downs. Except for a Camaro hiatus from
2003 to 2010, each year has brought a new model with features
designed to surpass the competition. The seemingly inexhaustible
attraction of inexpensive V8 horsepower, sports car road handling,
and stylish good looks has permitted the classic American pony car
civil war to continue well into the 21st century.
For consignment, a 35th anniversary car celebrating the Camaro SS
and with SLP engineering spices thrown in for extra power and
looks, and a LOT of it! Our consignor purchased this car new in May
of 2002 and opted to have the SLP center mount exhaust added on
along with the heavy duty Auburn posi unit and has spent its life
being cared for and safely tucked away. Accumulating only 5,309
verified actual miles in its life and still having its window
sticker and all SLP literature, build sheet and all paperwork from
new as well as the original 2nd set of keys that succumbed to a
garage fire, thankfully the car was stored elsewhere at the time.
Ready to be shown and enjoyed or tucked away as an appreciating
investment, regardless of your choice, this car fits both bills
perfectly.
Exterior
This car screams SLP and anniversary options with it all bathed in
Bright Red. The front grille is slightly modified and has dual wide
white racing stripes starting at the bottom of the front spoiler
and moving towards the windshield where at the hood scoop it splits
and fades into a checkered flag. The grille is slightly different,
and an SS badge is neatly put in the very low center of said
grille. Chevrolet is known for their rakish styling on the front
glass, and this car is no exception with that windshield leaning
way back in this design. On top is a nice black canvas convertible,
all clean and sporting a rear glass window. On the sides, straight
steel and high impact plastic with well minded gaps creates the
front and rear quarters, (badged with 35th anniversary badges BTW!)
and doors. The wide stripes continue on the rear deck where there
is a SS specific wide spoiler that is very low profile. 17" 10
spoke SS specific aluminum wheels are on all 4 corners. Dual
exhaust peek out from under the center of the body matching
neoprene bumper. All paint is at the deep end of the pool and looks
showroom perfect throughout.
Interior
A swing of the sexy doors and we get loads of Ebony molded smooth
vinyl, integrated door pulls with a matching charcoal gray actuator
and plenty of power toggles to play with. Inside 2 tone gray
leather high back buckets showing slight wear that comes from age
and very little use have the SS 35th Anniversary logo embroidered
into the headrests and on the lighter inserts we see nothing but
clean supple leather. A center console undulates by these buckets
and houses the shifter for the automatic transmission. Shoehorned
in back are two more molded in two tone buckets with not a lot of
legroom but they are there. The center of the dash rises to the
occasion with a premium sound system including AM/FM/CD (an
optional 12-disc CD changer is mounted in the hatch area), climate
controls, and an ASR, (traction control), button. A beautifully and
gracefully arched dash top in front of the driver has all the
essential gauges and warnings should something go awry during your
performance drive. Charcoal gray carpeting floods the floors and is
protected by color matching carpeted mats.
Drivetrain
The factory 346ci 5.7 Liter LS1 V8 sits between the fenders and is
looking as good as the day it was installed. It is fed by EFI and
has a Tremec T56 6-speed manual transmission on the back. The rear
axle is a 10-bolt 3.42 with the optional Auburn posi-traction
setup. All stock and just the way the folks at the Quebec plant and
SLP intended.
Undercarriage
Beautifully preserved with factory overspray still seen on floor
pans and fuel tank. The factory dual to single to dual exhaust is
on and looking just fab with its SLP center mount outlet. Handling
is courtesy of front independent Macpherson struts and rear is
torque arm with coil springs. Power disc brakes are on all 4
corners.
Drive-Ability
A quick starter and off to the test track. Here it performed well
in all facets with endless acceleration, bias free braking and
wonderful handling. All functions were performing as they should on
this SS SLP Camaro, and we kept our drive short so as to not rack
up too many miles on this example.
A dual advantage to this particular car with its anniversary
edition bling and the extra performance of the SLP package we have
a car that not only looks high performance but also fits the bill
when you push the accelerator floorward. Street Legal
Performance!
