(2005 & 2006); original owner?s manual; original operations and
maintenance guide; and more Looking for a new parade vehicle for
yourself or fire district? This rarely seen restored, wartime
American-LaFrance fire truck may just fit the bill. After it was
retired, it was relegated to Independence Day parade duties. It is
a sight to behold and gets cheers from both young and old!Purchased
on February 16, 1944, and shipped on August 7, 1944, it was
delivered to a rural fire district in southern St. Louis County,
the Mehlville Fire Department, known today as the Mehlville Fire
Protection District. Unlike most engines of that era, engine No. 1
was specially ordered with extras - white with a gold livery versus
the traditional red. Besides the two headlights, there are two red
parking lights; two rear-mounted swivel spotlights; a large,
swivel-mounted, high-powered searchlight; a taillight; and
instrument panel lights. After ?Bob? the fireman retired from his
40 years of service with the Mehlville FD, he set out to restore
the ?44 American?LaFrance you see here! After it was brought back to
life, in 2005 and 2006. The previous owner, a former fire district
employee, added about 3,000 miles to the clock. It was always
garaged and used for parades and was also used to take multiple
firefighters to their final resting place. The rear bench seats are
easily removable. The truck?s paint and chrome trim are in excellent
overall condition, the bodywork is straight and solid, the chrome
front bumper shines, and the split windshield is clear and intact.
The engine bay is very tidy and there are various red, white and
blue emergency lights and other safety equipment. A large firehose
wraps from one side to the other over the truck?s nose. This truck
has newer Vortex Highway Plus tires, size 6.25-20 at every corner.
Each tire is mounted on a white steel, slatted wheel. The wheels
are in excellent order while the tires are in very good condition.
Under the vee?d hood is a rebuilt 491 CID 12-cylinder valve-in-head
engine with dual duplex downdraft carburetors, one carb for each
bank of cylinders, that are interconnected for synchronized
throttle control. Backing the engine is a four-speed, heavy-duty
manual transmission. The original water tank was removed during the
restoration process to allow for a flat floor and bench seating. It
will travel at highway speed as well.Inside, the red bench seat
contrasts well with the exterior color and looks great, as does the
three-spoke steering wheel. The white and corrugated, bare metal
floors are in great shape, as are white inner door liners and
instrument panel with a full array of gauges. A floor-mounted shift
and emergency brake complete the interior. Documentation includes
many color photos before (2001) and during (2005 & 2006) the
restoration; original owner?s manual; original operations and
maintenance guide; and more. If you collect antique fire trucks, or
