plus new taillights and bezels 104-inch wheelbase Looking for a
classic Jeep from the post-war period? Willys-Overland made what
you crave in the form of this 1949 Jeepster. This example, one of
2,960 Jeepsters made in 1949, was assembled in Willys-Overland?s
Toledo, Ohio factory. Dressed in red trimmed in black, the Jeep?s
paint and trim are in overall excellent condition, as one would
expect from a recently restored example. A new, white, snap-on
canvas top contrasts nicely with the red and the black exterior.
The bodywork is straight and solid while the cargo area looks
great. There are new chrome bumpers, new parking lights and bezels
plus new taillights and bezels. The engine bay is tidy and there
are amber foglights. This Jeepster rolls on US Royal Safety 800
wide whitewall bias-ply tires, size 7.10-15, including the
rear-mounted spare tire, all with full factory wheel covers. This
Jeepster rides a 104-inch wheelbase. Under the hood is the original
134 CID ?Go-Devil? L-head four-cylinder engine. Backing this motor
is a Borg-Warner T96 three-speed manual transmission and a Dana 23
rear axle. Other mechanical features are a Ross cam and lever
steering, independent front suspension with correct, single leaf
spring (Planadyne) and semi-elliptical rear springs with a
torsional stabilizer bar. Driver convenience features include a
conversion to front disc brakes while retaining drums in the rear.
Inside, the red vinyl seats shine brightly, the front seat split
70/30. A contrasting black carpet is in very good order, along with
a corded, two-spoke steering wheel that is in good, original order.
The metal dashboard with a center array of gauges and inner door
liners are in similar shape to the carpet and seats. A
column-mounted shift lever rounds out the interior. Overdrive &
rear marker, tail-lights are inop. The Jeepster borrowed features
from both the Willys Station Wagon and Truck, attempted to bridge
the gap between the ?utilitarian? post-war Universal CJ Series and
the one-ton ?family-oriented? station wagons and ?-ton
light-utility trucks. Following the end of WWII, the
Willys-Overland company chairman recognized the importance of
expanding its offerings to include a civilian passenger car and
with the help of industrial designer Brooks Stevens, presented a
model more likely to appeal to younger market segments. The
original Jeepster (VJ) was first released to the public on April 3,
1948. If you?re looking for one of the first sport-utility
vehicles, then you found one in this Willys Jeepster. Why not drop
by MotoeXotica Classic Cars today and look it over for yourself?
