Vehicle Description
1972 GMC K1500 Pickup
If you love old Chevy and GMC trucks it might be because you have
memories from when you were a kid riding in one of those early
models. Or you might just love the classic lines and the way they
look. The C series is a line of GM 2-wheel drive trucks, while the
K series is a line of GM 4-wheel drive trucks. Beginning in 1960,
trucks of this generation were named as 10, 20, and 30 series to
represent the 1/2, 3/4, and 1-ton versions of GM's light truck
line. Introduced for the 1960 model year, the C/K series was
marketed by Chevrolet until 2002 in the United States (GMC marketed
the series from 1960 to 1987).
For consignment, a 3 year old body and interior restoration with
just 1,000 miles on the build, with a flash drive of over 600
photos of the redux for this 1971 K15 pickup truck is shows the
dedication and attention to detail paid during the build. A very
popular body style with now the added benefit of power windows, AC
and it is ready for someone who wants to hack around in a classic
K15 as these never really go out of style.
Exterior
Clean bright red sandwiches a white mid-section on the straight
steel panels of this truck. Paint is good with nary a spec of rust
to be seen. The cab roof is painted white, and also on those side
panels as a delineation marker, a stainless and black painted
trimming runs the length of the truck. On the bottom of the white
is more stainless with a wide black stripe bordering a shiny
stainless. Gaps are nicely minded throughout, and the grille up
front is looking spiffy. The bumpers are hanging in there as well
and looking great in blingy shiny chrome. Just behind the cab is
the bed which is all new steel with the inside fully coated in a
black spray in bedliner. The bed sides and tailgate are excellent
with no scratches for dings. On the very back is more red and white
with the trimming running across the top to match the sides. We
note the lower piece of trim has either been left off or lost as
the mounting holes are still visible. 15" deep dish truck rally
style sport wheels are on all 4 corners and all wrapped with Falken
outline white letter Wildpeak 32/11.50R15LT tires.
Interior
A swing of the doors and we see Sheridan style embossing on a
mid-door black vinyl panel which houses the actuators and chrome
power window switches. On its upper edge are red painted metal
sills and white window frame surrounds. Inside your eyes are bowled
over by smooth black vinyl bolsters in the form of a bench with red
and black houndstooth cloth inserts in a wonderful tuck and roll
pattern. This stretching bench presents as new as it was part of
the restoration. Also, the steering wheel is a later model 4 spoke
style mounted atop a tilt steering column. This fronts a restored
dash with a red steel face with a textured black bezel for the all
new round gauges, which even includes a factory tachometer. The
dash continues across and in the center is a modern AM/FM stereo
with Vintage Air heater and AC slides below. Up top, is a black
vinyl padded topper that is free of cracks. Down low is like new
black carpet and covering the roof is a heavily padded black vinyl
headliner insert floating in a sea of red steel.
Drivetrain
Upfront under the hood is a rebuilt by the previous owner 350ci V8
in its orange/red painted and patinaed glory. The engine bay is
clean and no rust with supple wiring and hoses, however the engine
itself is showing paint chip offs, and surface rust. This mill is
topped with a 4-barrel carburetor and has a TH350 3-speed automatic
transmission mated to the back. A 12-bolt rear axle is on the back
and for the front axle we note a Dana 44 unit. Looking clean and
original under here.
Undercarriage
Some light surface rust is seen throughout, but the frame remains
structurally sound. Body hangers are rust free as are fender
undersides and rockers. No invasive rust anywhere to be seen, and
noted the engine shows as very clean on the bottom end. Leaf spring
suspension with a 3" suspension lift provides the truck-like ride
for both the front and rear and we note power front disc brakes
working in conjunction with power rear drums. A dual exhaust system
with glasspack style mufflers snakes its way rearward, ending with
turnouts just behind each rear tire.
Drive-Ability
I love the perspective one gets behind the wheel of a lifted pickup
truck although I usually require a step ladder to gain access. That
said, this truck fired right up with the twist of the key and off
to the test track I went. On the track the truck performed with
adequate power, good bias free braking and superior handling. A
smooth ride for a truck as well. All functions were operational
during my drive save for the power windows not actuating and the
horn not tooting, and I didn't take the time to test the grip of
the knobby rubber by doing any off-roading.
A nicely restored and very popular truck with 4-wheel drive
capability, a lifted suspension and a super comfy bench seat that
all work together to bring you a truck that is at home not only on
the street but on any trail you'd like to conquer. Presented with
nearly no cosmetic faults, waiting for you in our South Mallway and
ready to climb mountains.
