For Sale: 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle in Morgantown, Pennsylvania

Vehicle Description

1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS

If you're confused as to why people refer to Chevelles and Malibus as the same car, it's because Malibu was a trim level of the Chevelle from 1964 to 1977. The Malibu wasn't a separate model until 1978. No Chevelles originally had a woodgrain console. But if you see one with a woodgrain console now, it's likely from a Monte Carlo. There was a version of the Chevelle only available in Canada that had a slightly different grille and trim. It was called the Beaumont.

For consignment, a really excellent adventure into a restoration that was full off and full-on quality finished. A simple stunner of an interior, a straight and true exterior with tasteful paint, and a real runner under that hood in the form of a 454ci LS5 V8 beauty with high scores during judging and a numbers matching correct drivetrain.

Exterior
For 1970, the face lifted Chevelle moved an impressive 634K units. Not only did that high-profile success earn GM big money, it also solidified the nameplate as part of Chevy's oft romanticized 'golden era'. At the front of this coupe, a split grille hangs a prominent "SS" emblem between a small "CHEVELLE" script, stainless-trimmed T3 headlights and an original re-chromed bumper. Opposite that bumper, a cowl induction hood leads the eye to fresh glass that's seated in original stainless frames. At the base of those frames, chrome door handles, a chrome driver's mirror and white-tinged "SS454" badges complement correct wheel trim. And at the back of the car, a second original, chromed bumper hangs a standard Super Sport inlay. All bathed in near perfect Classic White and wide black stripes racing up the middle of the hood and trunk lid. Topping off the bottom of this car are 14-inch Magnum 500 SS center badged wheels all wrapped in Firestone Wide Ovals on all 4 corners.

Interior
Its correct combination of bench and bucket seats that are firm to the touch, encased in black vinyl, original belts, and high backs. In front of those seats, a straight Super Sport dash frames new inserted OEM gauges clean and pristine provide all the telemetry you'll need for those hot laps. Below that dash, black carpet floats an original, re-chromed shifter that would make an airline pilot proud, and this is inside a correct console and color-keyed floor mats with red, white and blue Heartbeat of America stitching. At the sides of that carpet, door panels center classy stainless trim and requisite "SS" emblems on bright handles and supple, comfortable armrests. In front of the driver the steering wheel laps a black column. And behind the passengers, the car's fully restored trunk is finished with a correct jack and full-size spare tire. Headliner is nice and tight and is also black, and where the shoulder belts hang.

Drivetrain
A great looking original and numbers matching orange blocked 454ci LS5 V8 graces a very clean and restored engine bay. Chromed valve covers, orange heads, clean exhaust manifolds, and a chromed air cleaner cover add to the mechanical jewelry, and it just goes on and on with soft supple hoses and clean wiring. A single correct Rochester Quadrajet 4bbl carb is atop, and a correct CS Hydramatic tagged TH400 in on the back but is missing its partial VIN stamp. A 12-bolt 3.31 posi rear is on the way back.

Undercarriage
Clean and rust free nearly as close to showroom as you can get, we have F41 independent coil springs up front, and a 4 link with coil springs on the rear. Power disc brakes upfront, and power drums on the rear, and dual exhaust with Turbo mufflers added can be seen. The suspension looks like almost new, as does the floor pans, and frame.

Drive-Ability
As usual with these early 1970's Chevrolet muscle cars, our spec writer and myself clamor to drive these, so we flipped a coin and it landed on its side, so we both drove it! (One of the many bennies working at CAM). Anyway, she fired right up with a roar, we sped off to the test track and there we found this car to be in ship shape, running smoothly, accelerating with no end, and cornering like a big lumbering muscle car from 1970. it was a very enjoyable ride even with some issues that crept up which included a horn that wouldn't toot, the AC blowing warm, and the reverse lights not illuminating.

Restoration is a wonderful thing especially when it is done to this level, and this one will not let you down even with the few noted issues. Crisp clean Classic White paint, Magnum 500 wheels, vinyl top, 454ci engine, and a black interior like the original, all the boxes are checked, and the i's are dotted as well as t's crossed on this one for the presentation, so come and get it, it will slide out of here very fast, just like it handled our test track.
