For sale is a 1974 VW Type 181 Thing. The vehicle is in excellent condition. A $25,684 restoration was completed at 92,000 miles, speedometer currently shows 00950 miles (8,950 miles since 92,000-mile restoration - verifiable). The restoration included a complete vehicle disassembly, body repair (minor), new paint, and reassembled with a remanufactured 1600 cc engine, refinished engine tin, new engine components, new top and frame, side curtains, brake lines, nuts, bolts, seals, new rubber and fender welting.
The interior is upgraded with custom front seats, a Wolfsburg wood steering wheel, chrome EMPI trigger shifter, and partial carpeting in the inside of the doors, rear deck, back of the rear seats, and the glove box.
The vehicle’s mechanicals have been completely gone over by two top-level foreign auto repair shops in Columbus, Ohio, and $6,560 was spent to bring the vehicle to tip-top running shape (receipts available). The shops completed written vehicle inspections and statements of condition, which are available. There are receipts available to verify the restoration and the recent maintenance and repairs performed under current ownership. Maintenance and repairs include a new clutch, pressure plate, and through-out bearing, rear main seal and flywheel oil seal, transmission final drive oil seal, gear oil change, new bump stops, replacement of spring plate bushings, new rear shocks, and replacement of the firewall and rear engine rubber seals. The master cylinder was replaced, a new steering damper was installed, new rear wheel brake cylinders, brake hoses, new valve cover gaskets, a new oil screen gasket kit, and a new carburetor.
The vehicle is fitted with new Hankook Kinergy tires, the fuse box was replaced, and the wiring was updated. All gauges and lights are in working order. The Thing comes with a convertible top boot, spare tire cover, and car cover.
