To compete with the ever-popular Fox bodied Mustang, Dodge
initially unveiled the Laser, which looked amazingly similar to the
Mustang. This car was low slung, and sporty, with plenty of
upgrades aimed at the executive market. Eventually this car became
the Sporty Daytona which was more for the masses. In 1988 the ES
model was offered with contrasting ground effects fairings, and
snowflake wheels and only available in a 5-speed.
For consignment, a rust free 72K non verifiable mile, (title
reading mileage exempt), survivor in the form of a Daytona Pacifica
Turbo from Dodge right out of 1988. This one has nifty rear
louvers, a snappy overstuffed leather interior, and a rear spoiler.
Nice and clean aluminum wheels and an all-original car, (except for
paint), all here and ready for the plucking.
Exterior
All original, all lower mileage condition, all black save for the
red stripe highlighting the lower body molding, the small "Turbo"
door decals, and the Daytona Pacific badging on the hatch. A few
faults are noted in the finish with overall spider scratches being
the worst, but no visible rust is present. Hidden headlights, black
trimmings, tinted windows, and a black louvered rear glass with a
spoiler on the end and we are talking Daytona. Throw on a sporty
power bulge turbo hood, a triangular window for the B pillar, and
taillights that stretch from side to side with a body matching
neoprene rear bumper, and let's go racin'. And lest we forget the
luxury styled aluminum wheels, the Pacifica was more of a refined
sport luxury package, which are shod in like new blackwall
radials.
Interior
A swing of the doors and we can see wide tufting in the
horizontally stitched burgundy leather panel covering the top of
the door panels. On the bottom is burgundy carpet and streaking
through the middle is a molded vinyl armrest, extra padded with a
black insert for the power locks and power mirrors. A set of nice
buckets with more of the heavily tufted leather for tuck and roll
inserts, and smooth leather bolsters with vinyl piping cover these
burgundy seats. Age wear and minor cracking is seen on the front
buckets as well as some tearing on the outer upper bolster. Same
for the rear bench which presents more like dual buckets with a
shared center panel. A nice clean console with a glovebox, power
window and power seat toggles, and the shifter sitting proudly in
the center, flirts with the dash which shows as original, and is in
burgundy and black with LCD numbered and lettered instrumentation.
A burgundy cloth headliner with heavy sagging hangs above.
Drivetrain
A 2.2-liter turbocharged 4 banger is under the hood in a dusty and
patinaed engine bay. It has EFI, and a 3-speed automatic
transmission with a 3.48 final drive.
Undercarriage
Well preserved down below, the underside has only slight surface
rust mixed with some patina and road dirt, structurally very sound
and even has the black overspray still seen in the floor pans. A
single clean rust-free exhaust is on, and the suspension is
independent Macpherson strut upfront, and solid bar coil springs
for the rear is like new. Power disc brakes were used on all 4
corners providing the whoah factor.
Drive-Ability
Hopping inside this car is a joyous experience as my cohort and I
sank down into the overstuffed leather buckets! She fired right up
and performed wonderfully on the test track. All functions were
working swimmingly.
Performance and luxury all wrapped up in a sporty package is what
the Daytona Pacifica signifies and this example hits all the marks.
Nice black paint, a plush leather interior and sporty performance
from the turbocharged 4 cylinder under the hood all work together
making for one sexy and powerful late 80's ride. This American
sports car is truly grown up!
