Vehicle Description

1934 Ford 40 Roadster

The great thing about the evolution of hot rodding is over the past 30 years a vast array of excellent products has continually streamed onto the market. And presently, anyone with a checkbook and an affinity for going way too fast and looking way too good can build anything from state-of-the-art rides, avant-garde to old school cool.

This sweet Ford roadster, wrapping a well-done chassis and Hemi V8 in show stopping aesthetics, is a ground-up build that combines the core strengths of original hot rodding with an uncompromising vision and top-notch componentry. And, if you're looking to score a fully sorted custom that mixes classic good looks with proven road manners, it's a strong candidate for your next street rod! The original car body remains steel, however the fenders and running boards have been removed, the bumpers have been changed to bars, and the front windshield has been chopped, and now we have a classic hot rod ready to take on anything that comes along.

Exterior
With chromed Super Bell style front end framed by the original hood and a shield shaped original 1933 grille, this rod presents low and mean. A simple chrome V shaped bar now for the front bumper along with chromed headlights, you are styling in late 1940's hot rod looks. Silver headers emanate straight out from the glorious Hemi and can be left uncorked to disturb the peace or left closed up and send spent gasses under the car. A long swooping steel door door makes its way rearward and ends in a curled under steel trunk lid that has a very small single bar rear bumper hanging below. A black painted fuel tank floats just above the bumper and is flanked by small bullet style taillights. A soiled black convertible top in black canvas with a glass rear window is included for inclement weather driving. Complementing black deep dish steel wheels with chromed Ford dog dish caps are wrapped by big 33x12.50R15 tires on the back, and 145R15's on the front, complete with black sidewalls. A shout out to the well finished trunk with overstuffed saddle ultra leather paneling and black carpet.

Interior
Reaching in to grab the door actuators, we swing the suicide doors open and are met with a fine mix of saddle tuck and roll ultra leather as well as smooth ultra leather in the same hue. Chrome actuators are the only deviation from the saddle and the quality is just amazing. Prepare to be awestruck as this is just the door panel. A Tea's undulating bench seat provides room for 2 and is finished in more saddle ultraleather with a tuck and roll and smooth finish. A black rimmed banjo style steering wheel fronts a black sprayed metal dash that has a central machine swirl pattern aluminum oval gauge cluster loaded with black face AutoMeter gauges. This is complete with a few lights, and dash central holds a tachometer cocked toward the drivers' view. Under the flourish pinstripe finished glovebox door is a Jensen AM/FM/CD player and all looks just fab. Black carpeting floods the floors and a Lokar shifter with a green ghoul's head topper sits proudly in the center hump. More tuck and roll saddle ultra leather covers the kick panels and wraps around the rear of the passenger compartment with hidden speakers behind the driver and passengers' heads. Just topflight work here.

Drivetrain
There are street rod drivetrains and then there are STREET ROD drivetrains. A true throwback and deviation from the norm and we peer into the open sided engine bay. Our eyes are drawn to a circa 1956 354ci Hemi V8 which has been fitted with 10:0-1 compression Ross pistons and a Isky .485 lift camshaft. It is equipped with Hot Heads aluminum cylinder heads and intake and is topped by a pair of Edelbrock 500cfm 4-barrel carburetors. A 700R4 4-speed automatic transmission has been bolted on to the back of this beautiful mill, and it sends power rearward to a quick-change rear axle presently with 4.10 gears. Eat your heart out Chevy boys!

Undercarriage
Straight sturdy sprayed black steel makes up the frame and attached to it we see a chromed Super Bell style front end with transverse leaf springs and a Unisteer rack. Speaking of the frame it has been boxed and is nearly as clean as the body. Some nice red and blue attachments are peppering the underside as well as a stainless-steel exhaust system with Sanderson headers and stainless steel glasspack style mufflers. Bringing all this beauty to a stop are trick So-Cal Speed Buick drum brakes in front that are actually a disc setup hiding under the finned and chromed drums. In the rear we see Wilwood disc brakes along with chrome 4 bar suspension with coilovers.

Drive-Ability
This car lit quickly and idled super smoothly. Pop it into gear and I was off into the wild blue yonder, (actually the Classic Auto Mall test area), where I found this car to run nicely, steer easily, and come to a stop quickly.

This classic hot rod looker with its suicide doors and lack of extra weight is a runner harking back to another hot rod era. The color combo is beautiful and carries throughout, even on the undercarriage. No fenders and wide rubber, and I'm waiting for the arm to drop.
