Vehicle Description
2001 Ford Mustang Convertible
New Edge, this is a code name for the 1999-2004 Mustang. They are
technically SN-95s and were still built on Ford's Fox platform.
This was a term used to classify the later SN-95 Mustang's redesign
in 1999 that featured sharper edges than the previous Mustangs. The
1994-1998 Mustang's soft body lines were replaced with sharp, edgy
body lines. While still being classified as an SN-95 Mustang, this
vehicle took on a great new look while getting a small engine
upgrade and interior features to match. As mentioned before, the
exterior was much sharper than the previous Mustang giving a meaner
look to the 1999-2004 Mustangs. While Ford carried over the 4.6L
motor, a "performance increased" cylinder head was used to squeeze
more power out of the 2-valve motor. The interior had minor
upgrades but stayed mostly unchanged. While the Saleen and the SVT
Cobra were carried over, Ford also brought back the Bullitt and
Mach 1!
The third year of this generation of the venerable Mustang, this
New Edge style convertible, painted in sinister black with hand
painted flames, new 17" aluminum wheels, charcoal leather interior
and a reliable 3.8 Liter V6 to power you down the highways and
byways. Pony up and put the top down on this flamed horse and
gallop off into the sunset.
Exterior
In keeping with tradition, Mustang designers carry over several
design cues on every generation they produce, and this one is no
exception. With a more rounded design, shades of the ones that came
before them with recognizable headlights now smoothed into the
front end, and the central grille with the galloping horse badge in
the center. A long hood starts out in painted flames that lick back
the hood with a slight indent leading back to a faux scoop then
onto the swept back windshield. From this top of the swept back
windscreen point, the canvas takes over and presents in black with
no tears or blemishes and a clear glass rear window, but we do note
the top to windshield frame seal is poking out when the top is
closed. Being power activated, it is an easy up and down thanks to
a new top motor and top cylinders. More flames decorate the front
bumper and fire back the fenders into the doors and have another
earlier cue in the hockey stick cove which is in the beginnings of
the rear quarter on this model where the newer respray of black
fully takes over the body. On the back is a small but effective
spoiler, and a now integrated curved trio of rear taillights,
(think 1964-1/2!), with a large rear neoprene bumper and a large
MUSTANG embossment in orange along with Yosemite Sam and the age
old trucker line "Back Off!" finishes off the back. Multi-spoke
polished and black finished 17" wheels with new rubber are on all 4
corners and this completes our tour of the exterior.
Interior
Nicely curved molded door panels house the power window, power lock
and power mirror toggles and controls and have a built-in speaker
to boot. The dark charcoal shows up on these panels along with some
charcoal carpet and even a black panel for the buttons. Aged,
wrinkled and slightly smudged charcoal bucket seats have just the
right amount of slight creases and folds like easily aged leather
tends to do. These have high backs and rounded headrests for extra
protection, as well as an embroidered gray galloping pony. The 2
plus 2 rear seat is in the back and has a surprising amount of
room, making the climb back there worthwhile for the ride. Black
carpet floods the floors and is clean and in the center a console
runs up to the dash. At their meeting point is a curvaceous panel
which houses the double-DIN JVC AM/FM/CD stereo that is Bluetooth
and Pandora capable, temp controls, and A/C venting, rises
gracefully to form dual eyebrows for the instruments and glove
box/airbag dash. More charcoal is used here as well. The
instruments are a single panel with analog gauges which reside
nicely under half of that curved dash top.
Drivetrain
Under that faux scooped hood is an original 3.8-liter V6. This mill
has EFI on top and a 4R70W 4-speed automatic transmission on back.
Rear wheels are driven by a Ford 7.5-inch 3.27 conventional rear
axle. The engine bay condition is overall dusty with a coating of
patina on most surfaces.
Undercarriage
Nearly just the way it left the assembly line in Detroit with
non-undercoated floor pans and unibody. The only rust we see is
surface corrosion on the untreated components with some of it
rather heavy toward the rear of the car. Power disc brakes are on
all 4 corners with the fronts being new, and we see a newer dual
exhaust system with Flow FX mufflers Flowmaster. Providing the ride
is an independent coil spring front suspension and in the rear a 4
link and coil spring arrangement.
Drive-Ability
This car started right up and I flipped the top down and it was off
to the sunny test track. Here it had nice acceleration, a throaty
sound, and good handling and braking. It is a comfortable car to
drive, and with all functions working, it could handle a long
cruise with ease and comfort.
