Overview
Roadster Salon is primarily a vintage convertible restoration shop. We specialize in limited edition, classic and rare Italian cars. Anytime we are presented with something unusual--like a true six speed Maserati GT--we grab the opportunity. We found the car through a venue that caters to international buyers, so we were surprised to find that the car was somewhat local.
In keeping with the Roadster Salon tradition of finding great examples of hard to find cars--we have a true gem. This is an extremely rare, true six-speed manual version of the GT. These are highly sought after. This version is very desirable, and much less expensive to maintain than the troublesome Cambiocorsa automatic version. Told this is one of 200 made. Beautiful cosmetics inside and out. Incredible high-end Maserati leather interior and real burled walnut wood. Stunning performance, with tremendous acceleration--even by contemporary standards. Very low miles, well maintained and ready to roll.
Brought to us with almost $9000 of recent maintenance receipts. Work included a brand new clutch assembly, ice cold A/.C compressor, and fresh tune. Records included. Superb cosmetics, clean title and spotless Auto Check report. Much tighter overall than similarly designed spider convertible.
Cosmetic and Mechanical Impressions
On arrival, it appeared the car had run over a large pot hole with the left rear tire. It was blistered so we replaced the tire with a new Pirelli. Although there was no damage to the wheel itself, the rear shock was broken, so we promptly replaced as well. No other suspension work was necessary.
You would expect a twenty year old car to show signs of wear. Not here. Even upon close inspection, there is nothing to betray the impression that this is a newer car. No door dings or significant scratches on the exterior. Silver paint is wet and vibrant with no crazing or fading. Paint appears original. Interior is equally nice. Leather is supple and not dried or cracked. On the mechanical side, no issues to report. Engine smooth with no worrisome sounds or noises. No pass through from exhaust. All electrical functions are as designed.
Driving Impressions
We've been told the Maserati GT is like an Italian Corvette. Although the performance may be similar--that's where the comparison ends. The Ferrari designed flat plane crank 4.2 V8 engine has the same DNA as the Ferrari 360 Modena. The multi-valve design offers the same technical sophistication as the most exotic power plants---far more advanced than American muscle cars. It sings well past 7000 rpm with a glorious sound that is reminiscent of an Italian Aria. The car is also much more refined and comfortable to drive than most of its competitors. The GT pampers the driver while keeping his senses alert and ready for the next curvy road. The manual gear box keeps you connected to the road ahead. Handling and braking are exemplary for this class of car. At no time does it feel heavy or ponderous. The rear seats add a modicum of practicality to this incredible sports coupe. Just FUN!
Market Report
Comps are very difficult to find for the six speed manual version, as only a few hundred were built. Considering the car's cosmetic and mechanical condition, service receipts and Roadster Salon backed warranty, we consider this car to be a bargain. Lovely car for the enthusiastic driver who values a good looking, well maintained future classic.
