Vehicle Description
1990 Ford Thunderbird
The Ford Thunderbird, (colloquially called the T-Bird), is a
personal luxury car produced by Ford from model years 1955 until
1997 and 2002 until 2005 across 11 distinct generations. Introduced
as a two-seat convertible, the Thunderbird was produced in a
variety of body configurations. These included a four-seat hardtop
coupe, four-seat convertible, five-seat convertible and hardtop,
four-door pillared hardtop sedan, six-passenger hardtop coupe, and
five-passenger pillared coupe, with the final generation designed
again as a two-seat convertible.
For consignment, a very nice, 30,194 title verified mile one owner
car from the second year of the MN-12 Thunderbird design. The
Thunderbird was redesigned for the 1989 model year and moved away
from long lived Fox platform and was produced to compete with the
European sport sedans and coupes of the day. Always garage kept and
looking just fine, it's time to spread your wings and soar above
the rest in this aerodynamic Tbird.
Exterior
Clean crisp white covers the steel and neoprene that make up this
smooth aero defeating body that is broken up by a thin black trim
band that runs around the car mid belt line. A few faults,
scratches and dings are seen on the body which remains devoid of
chrome save for the soaring bird leading the way on the hood and
taillights as well as the Thunderbird badge on the left rear. The
window surrounds and sporty mirrors are all finished in a satin
black and this nicely executed MN-12 design has integrated
headlights, all black trim, dual black sport mirrors which do a
glorious job of breaking up the sea of white. A keyless entry pad
is seen on the driver's door and saw blade style aluminum wheels
are seen on all 4 corners. Even with the few noted faults this 10th
generation example still looks great with its modern lines.
Interior
Gray crushed velour cloth covers the bolsters and for the inserts
are a lighter gray striped patterned broadcloth. This pattern
repeats on the long clean rear bench. One needs to look very
closely to see any wear or faults in the upholstery, however some
staining is noted on the gray medium pile carpeting, especially on
the rear flooring. A black console speeds up the center between the
buckets and houses a glovebox, small storage cubbies, the automatic
shifter, and the ashtray. Moving forward and upward we note the
climate controls, and then the factory AM/FM/Cassette stereo, cigar
lighter and power antenna switch. The gauge cluster, which shows in
light green LCD displays all the necessary functions of engine
operation and resides in the driver's bump out of the black dash.
Exterior lighting and the heater vents sit within a wood applique
strip insert and behind an original very nicely preserved steering
wheel. The headliner is nice and tight and shows near perfect and
the door panels are very nice and house more wood applique, the
power locks, power windows, and power mirror controls for the
doors.
Drivetrain
Sitting in the wide slightly patinaed engine bay is a 3.8 Liter V6
fed by EFI capable of making 140hp and backed by a Ford AOD 4-speed
automatic transmission with overdrive. A Ford 8.8-inch rear with
3.27 gears is waaaay back there throwing power to the rear
wheels.
Undercarriage
To sum it up in a few words, well cared for, with solid grayish
white steel for the flooring and unibody and a healthy dose of
surface rust on the suspension and untreated components. Nary a
hint of structural issues. The chassis is supported by independent
suspension front and rear and power front disc brakes with power
rear drums present on the corners. The factory installed single
exhaust is on for spent fossil removal.
Drive-Ability
The car started right up, idled smoothly, and ticked like a switch
watch on the power end with smooth acceleration and just as smooth
ride. Much more refined than the prior Fox platform cars and
certainly much more comfortable. A great performer with all
functions operational at the time of my drive. The crushed velour
caresses your body as you navigate the curves and provides good
support while remaining comfortable.
Sitting in this car is like going back in time, and one can almost
still whiff the new car smell in this low mileage, very well kept,
very nice example of the 1990 Bird. Loaded with conveniences this
is a cool bird. Driven somewhat sparingly, and well maintained,
flap your wings and take flight as you rise above the rest.
