Vehicle Description
1998 Ford Mustang GT
The new engine for the Mustang GT, an SOHC 4.6-liter V-8, invokes
technology that the obsolete 5.0 didn't have, yet it arrives at
almost identical output. The main reasons for changing the engines
were the tougher federal fuel-economy standards and onboard
diagnostic system (OBD-II) requirements that both kick in for 1996.
Ford knew the aged 5.0 liter was not going to make the cut
anymore.
Most of the real improvements brought about by the modular V-8
power plant are aimed not at performance, but rather at refinement.
Noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) characteristics are first
addressed in the engine structure itself, with lightweight pistons
and connecting rods, a deep-skirt block, deep head bolts, and five
cross-bolted main bearings. This 1998 Mustang GT is presented for
consignment in Atlantic Blue and sporting a 4-speed automatic
transmission and a mere 45,693 title verified actual miles. This
pony is ready to run.
Exterior
Bathed in the original factory applied Atlantic Blue, this body
presents nicely with well minded gaps and very good paint. A few
minor dings and scuffs show on the body and neoprene bumper covers
but one has to look hard to find them. A few of the iconic Mustang
design cues are still present on this SN-95 Mustang. The first is
the hockey stick cove which starts on the front of the rear quarter
panel with a faux air inlet duct and runs to the front of the doors
and into the front fender well. Second are the triple taillights
which now wrap around to the rear of the quarters. An aerodynamic
rear spoiler sits atop of the trunk lid. 17-inch dual 5 spoke
aluminum alloy wheels are wrapped 245/45/ZR17's rubber front and
back
Interior
A swing of the door shows us gray deluxe cloth front bucket seats
that show nearly no wear to the smooth gray cloth bolsters and
heavily padded multi-colored inserts. A 2 plus 2 rear bench seat,
that also folds down to provide more cargo room, is looking like it
was never sat in. Another iconic design cue is the dual swooped
dash which presents in black and gray and melts into a center
console with another rounded bottom curved line. Gray carpet covers
all the floors. The iconic curves continue on the door panels in
gray and black, with the swoops housing all the power toggles for
windows, locks and mirrors. All original instruments and all clean
as well showing the driver all necessary engine functions. A
centrally located HVAC control keeps the occupants comfortable
year-round and the factory AM/FM/Cassette & CD player is installed
to keep the audiophile in us sated.
Drivetrain
A pop of the hood reveals a slightly aged but well-kept 4.6L SOHC
V8 wedged between the shock towers. This technological marvel of
engineering is fed by EFI and we see power steering, air
conditioning and hydro-boost power brakes. A new serpentine belt
and pulleys have recently been installed. A 4R70W 4-speed automatic
transmission sends power back to a Ford 8.8" rear axle that
contains a 3.27 TracLok gear set. Reliability and fun all wrapped
up in one.
Undercarriage
Seen underneath, a structurally sound undercarriage with
independent coil springs upfront, and 4 link with coil springs on
the rear. Some surface rust is seen on the usual suspects, but this
is surface variety so is mostly harmless. Power disc brakes are all
around and a clean and rust-free dual exhaust system with OEM
mufflers puts a throaty sound out the back through chromed tips
which peek out the bottom of the rear bumper cover.
Drive-Ability
A quick starter, smooth runner, and very nice handling automobile.
The Atlantic Blue paint is fantastic, and the curvaceous interior
is beautiful. The 4.6 Liter V8 provides adequate power and puts a
smile on my face, (I love it when I get to kick in these low mile
pony cars). The stereo gives great sound quality even with all the
glass down and the roar from the dual exhaust. A plus!
An Atlantic Blue horse riding across the desert, the gray deluxe
cloth interior blending into the sun-drenched scenery of mesas and
saguaro cacti. The engine runs very nicely, putting out smooth
power through the 4-speed automatic to the rear wheels. A low
mileage wild horse that you tame with your braking foot and let run
loose with your right ostrich skin boot!
