Vehicle Description
1986 Ford Mustang GT
The third generation Mustang is frequently referred to as the Fox
Body Mustang since it used the new Fox platform. Fox Body Mustangs
were produced between 1979 and 1993, the longest generation of
Mustang to date, though there were several significant body updates
made throughout this generation. The Fox Body Mustangs were seen by
many as a return to what worked for the first generation of
Mustang, and a step away from the failings of the Mustang II.
Though the Fox Body Mustangs were popular at their release, they've
only gained popularity in the years since then. The Fox Body has
gained a reputation as a modders dream, and with the right
modifications this fox can fly.
Presenting a well-kept 5.0 Liter V8 powered Mustang GT with 81,816
miles which cannot be verified as the title reads 84,023 actual
miles but the odometer shows the aforementioned total. This car
shows well, and goes well, and is a very nice example of the final
year of the 4 eyed Fox Bodied Mustang which is a consignor-stated
special-order car with an automatic transmission.
Exterior
Bathed in a respray of Light Regatta Blue with new charcoal decals,
all steel panels are straight and show consistent gaps all around.
A fiberglass cowl induction hood leads the way, (the original hood
is included with the purchase), which is held in place with front
hood pins, floats just above a body matching neoprene crash bumper
with dual glass headlights in black insets on either side of the
mouth like air intake. Down low is more inset lighting in the form
of Marchal foglights and noted is a black belt line trim that
appears as a stripe as it has an inset area running the length of
the trim before ending in a gray GT inset callout. Badging is
correct and clean as is all the window trim. A sweeping hatchback
provides room for the large rear window complete with a defogger
and the glass has a light smoke tint applied. Rear quarter window
louver trimmings accentuate the hatch line and up top an
aftermarket sunroof has been cut into the steel. Our consignor
notes that factory rear window louvers will come with your
purchase. The rear bumper, like the front, is not marred and is in
nice condition with polished tips below and flush mount wrap around
taillights just above. Polished lip, black woven lace 16" ARE
wheels are seen on all 4 corners and the purchase will include the
original 10-hole aluminum wheels. Im feelin' foxy...
Interior
Some dark gray vinyl and some gray carpeting cover the door panels
and a swooping black and chrome trim spear matches the armrest/door
pull sweep angle. Black actuators and power window toggles are
mounted on as well. Inside matching dark gray broadcloth with a
perforation patterning throughout the inserts to the high back
buckets, and light gray broadcloth is reserved for the bolsters.
All delineated by red piping and they are in very nice condition,
no soils or faults as to tears and even the open headrests remain
in good condition. In the back 2 grabber 2 plus 2 buckets as a
bench stretches across the rear of the car. Gray carpeting covers
all the floors and looks just fine. A very clean molded center
vinyl console houses the B&M shifter and vehicle information
center with a red LED digital clock. Just above is an
AM/FM/Cassette player which is courtesy of Kenwood. The dash is
topped with a dark gray crack free pad which hovers over an
industrial gauge front and has black faced gauges deeply inserted.
A nice padded rally steering wheel is fronting the dash. The fuzzy
felted headliner is gray and looks good and a shout out to the
clean hatch area with its vinyl luggage pull cover and Kenwood CD
changer. Just like butter...
Drivetrain
The clean 5.0 Liter HO V8 pumps out 200hp and is fed its perfectly
metered fuel via EFI and has the added benefit of a chrome tubed
high flow air intake. Bolted to the back of the venerable mill is
an AOD 4-speed automatic transmission with a B&M shift kit.
This combination pushes power back to a Ford 8.8" rear with
consignor stated 3.73 gears. Phat to the max.
Undercarriage
Nice and clean, structurally sound and with only a dusting of
surface rust on the usual suspects. Even in the lower doors where
they meet the rockers, show as showroom with very good rubber
linings, and absolutely no rust. Power disc brakes upfront, and
power drums for the rear. Independent coil springs are up front and
in the back is a 4 link and coil springs to provide the ride.
Factory headers flow down to a cat-back Flowmaster exhaust
system...Word...
Drive-Ability
Our resident muscle car expert drove this example and reported good
power from the 5.0 Liter setup and firm shifting from the slightly
worked over automatic. It handled nicely and has bias free panic
stopping. All functions were working nicely in this very clean
interior and comfortable cruiser save for the A/C blowing warm and
the headlight switch not being securely mounted to the dash
front.
Fox bodied Mustangs are increasing in popularity due to their
return to more like the original Mustang concept of the early
1960's. For 1986 the GT was back and meant business and this
example would be right at home in any serious Mustang collection.
So, what are you waiting for? Don't miss the opportunity to own a
desirable piece of Ford performance history!
