Vehicle Description
1964 Ford Falcon Futura Convertible
The Ford Falcon was built by the Ford Motor Company from 1960
through 1970. During these years, the Falcon was offered in many
shapes and sizes to include two and four door sedans, two and four
door station wagons, two door hardtops, convertibles, sedan
deliveries and Rancheros. The original Mustang actually evolved
from the development of the Falcon. For the 1964 model year, Ford
added a Sprint Package, which gave the Falcon the Fairlane's 260ci
V8, a stiffer suspension, and a louder exhaust.
For consignment, a Falcon Futura convertible with a rebuilt 170ci
inline 6, an older restoration retaining the factory exterior
color, and a nicely done interior in the original color also. An
early renowned "compact", appealed to the families who would use it
as everyday transportation or as a second car. Accordingly, the
car's design adopted a modern styling theme that features excellent
proportions and minimal trim. This one is a driver, presents
nicely, and drives fab!
Exterior
Bedecked in a respray of Raven Black, (Nevermore!), this car has a
few rust bubbles, and the paint presents as nice but in need of a
good buffing and waxing. From its paperclip shaped trim spear
starting from the front and leading to the rear of the back quarter
ending with a crescendo of chromed chevrons, we can see some added
excitement in the form of a flying Falcon badge behind the front
wheels. A clean stainless eggcrate grille with floating highlights
in each crate let the crowd know that you have arrived. The back
panel of this car utilizes turbine style round taillights which
flank a shiny badge with Futura and a runoff textured aluminum rear
trim. Both bumpers are new and pristine, and the newer
professionally installed white convertible top presents to us in
tear free form is very clean and has a clear plastic rear window.
This top is power actuated and goes up and down with ease and
chrome wire hubcaps with faux spinners are wrapped in thin
whitewall rubber and look just fab.
Interior
Swinging one of the doors, it immediately shows off with its red
metal top sill with Futura badging in the center, aluminum
horizontal ribbed trim centerpiece, and some ribbed red vinyl on
the bottom. A handle and a window crank in shiny condition are in
this sea of textural and visual eye candy. In front, a low back
split bench in red vinyl with tuck and roll inserts and smooth
bolsters have a thick cream piping separating them. This carries
through to the rear seats, where see a bench version with another
flying Falcon emblem on the upper cushion, in showroom condition.
The dash front in brushed aluminum matte finish panels which frames
red steel above and below and is fitted with the original gauge
cluster and the original radio which still works, is seen in the
dash. Down low on the dash are the chrome heater slides and a
sprinkling of black knobs and pulls. An original red plastic
steering wheel complete with half round chrome horn ring fronts
this dash and like new red carpet is flooding the floors.
Drivetrain
Sitting in the nicely restored engine bay is a correct 170ci inline
6-cylinder. A beneficiary of a recent rebuild and looking snappy
with the black painted block, red valve cover and air cleaner
assembly. A 2-speed Ford-O-Matic transmission is on back and the
rear axle weighs in with a 3.50 ratio.
Undercarriage
Coated in the factory undercoating and a dose of patina, this car
has no rust, is very sound structurally, and has independent front
with coil springs suspension, a leaf sprung back suspension, and
drum brakes with a dual reservoir master cylinder complete the
package. Single exhaust with a stock style muffler sends spent
gasses to the rear and underneath are just fiiiine-O-mite!
Drive-Ability
A super quick starter, smooth idle while she warms up, and we're
off! Nice power and pickup, fine handling and no inoperable devices
to speak of, even the top toggle. A truly fine ride that can be
enjoyed in warm weather and during the top up months.
To sum it up, a nice example of the 64 Falcon with the Futura
option added from the factory. A power top for some open-air
motoring, nice paint and a fab interior plus this car was getting
ooohs and ahhhs before it even hit the showroom floor. Is this
classic in your Futura?
