remarkable car that must drive almost exactly as when it left the
showroom floor over thirty-five years ago and which needs nothing
but a new proud owner!Few products from the Motor City have been as
well-defined in the market as the Continental Mark IV. Produced by
Fords Lincoln-Mercury division from 1972 to 1976. the Mark IV was
the sleeker, flashier successor to the successful 1969-71 Mark III.
A team of two designers and six modelers under the direction of
veteran FoMoCo stylist Wes Dahlberg developed the Mark IVs imposing
profile, which, surprisingly, was only four inches longer (and 200
lbs lighter!) than its predecessor. When Ford president Bunkie
Knudsen saw it, he reportedly said, "Gentlemen, that is the next
Mark, do not change anything!"Of course, all you hardcore Lincoln
enthusiasts know this was not the first Continental Mark IV, as
Lincoln also produced a Mark IV in 1959. But when the Mark III was
introduced for '69, the Mark series roman numerals were reset,
rather like a TV or movie franchise reboot. Anyway, by 1975 the
Mark IV was in the fourth year of its five-year product cycle, so
Lincoln offered a series of special trim packages to offer buyers
some exclusivity. As showcased in this original Lincoln-Mercury
dealer film, these included the Lipstick and Blue Diamond luxury
groups. (L-M expanded on this theme in 1976 with its Blass,
Cartier, Givency, and Pucci fashion-designer editions.) Of course,
the Mark IV will be eternally remembered for its signature styling
features: the faux-Rolls grille, spare tire bump, and opera
windows, and all three are on prominent display here.In 1975
Lincoln introduced the LUXURY GROUP. The Luxury Group cars were
topped off with a 'Normande Grain' vinyl roof with moonroof and
which featured a new-for-1975 body color band around the edges.
Just below the fender line, a double body side stripe ran from
front to rear, matching the vinyl roof color and accenting the
elegant lines of the Mark IV.Priced starting at $475, Lincoln
introduced two new Luxury Group Options for 1975, continuing a
successful marketing program started in 1973 that allowed special
combinations of colors and fabrics to define a limited edition
automobile, and allow buyers to own a more distinctive car. Since
most of the parts necessary to create these limited editions were
pulled straight from the parts shelves, the cost was very little to
Lincoln, yet it allowed the Mark IV to achieve higher status in the
personal luxury car marketplace. For 1975, the two new options
topped off the Luxury Group lineup with a Normande Grain vinyl roof
in a choice of two styles. The Full Vinyl Roof (code FL) which
featured a new-for-1975 body color band around the edges. This was
accomplished by moving the vinyl roof molding away from the roof
rail and windshield top moldings, leaving a space between them for
the body color. This effect gave the car a much updated appearance
over previous models with traditional vinyl roof coverings, where
the vinyl edge was concealed beneath the chrome trim moldings. At
additional cost, the new Landau Vinyl Roof (code LL) could be
specified. This roof style featured a heavy chrome band along the
front edge of the vinyl roof, which covered the rear third of the
car roof. A sweeping band of chrome ran forward along the top of
the doors and terminated where it met the windshield pillar. This is
a rare opportunity to own a very fine and unabused example of an
obviously always garaged 1975 Lincoln Continental Mark IV 2 Door
Hardtop 'Luxury Edition' Coupe with only 59K original miles with
absolutely no evidence or history of any rust or accidents in this
striking and very rare color combination! This is a great
investment that's sure to appreciate over the years for any
American classic car collector of obviously any Lincoln enthusiast!
