Vehicle Description
1985 Chevrolet Camaro Z28
Z28 is the most famous Chevrolet RPO (regular production option)
code ever. No other option code has become so synonymous with high
performance. Other option codes have been used for well-known
packages such as Z22 (Rally Sport) and Z27 (Super Sport), but the
option names/descriptions became famous, not the RPO number. It has
also been said that 2 doors and 8 cylinders, but this could be a
coincidence because 28 was the next code in line!
For consignment, a very nice example of the Z28 from 1985. With 93K
on the clock, a healthy V8 and a rarely seen black interior, this
beauty is a turnkey car, ready to roll out of the halls of the
Classic Auto Mall, and into your driveway, or down Main Street!
Exterior
Blaze Red covers the straight steel body panels, fairings and front
built in spoiler of the car, which is showing a few areas of spot
in and overall fade to the finish. Panels are straight and minding
their gaps very nicely. Up front are dual rectangle headlights
embedded deep within the front assembly flanking the vented hood.
On the back is a snazzy small spoiler at the bottom of a curved
tinted greenhouse glass rear window, and this wraps taillights
which include brake lights, turn signals, and the backup lights all
in a row. A thin black trim band encircles the base of the car and
breaks up the red nicely. 16-inch 5 spoke alloy wheels are on the 4
corners and are marked front and rear due to wheel offset and are
wrapped in Goodyear Eagle rubber.
Interior
A snazzy black angled striped broadcloth bolsters bowls you over in
bucket seat configuration shows smooth broadcloth in the middle
panels on seat and back. Bolsters are smooth and all bordered with
charcoal piping. This also holds true for the rear 2 plus 2 seats
which individually fold down for rear compartment access. Some age
wear is noted on the front seats and the rear seat upper cushions
have succumbed to sun fade, turning them a shade of blue. A black
console and dash, house all the critical instrumentation, as well
as climate controls, radio, automatic shift lever, and power window
toggles. Power steering, power brakes, and a remote door mirror
toggle working and are great conveniences with this sports car. The
striped black broadcloth shows up again on the door panels and is
bordered above by a black plastic sill and down below by clean
black carpeting. This same carpet is seen covering the floors and
above hangs a clean black cloth headliner.
Drivetrain
The Tuned Port Injection 5.0 Liter gives plenty of smooth power and
is fed with electronic fuel injection. On the back is a 4-speed
automatic transmission (700R4 Model). All this attached 10-bolt
3.23 rear axle.
Undercarriage
Some surface rust is noted on the suspension and driveshaft and
rear pumpkin, however the floor pans are solid, as is unibody
construction. Rear drum brakes are on and front discs, all power
are on. Independent coil spring front suspension, and torque arm
with coil spring suspension for the rear is seen. A Flowmaster cat
back exhaust is now installed.
Drive-Ability
As I sat inside, I was harkened back to my mid 1980's memories with
my mullet teased just right and screaming down the highway going to
the shore. This car fired right up, and the test track proved all
those memories true, a great cruiser, smooth accelerator, and good
handling. The A/C was not operating so I rolled down the windows
while I cruised and all of Morgantown got to enjoy Sledgehammer by
Peter Gabriel.
An all original car harkening back to the days of big hair. Not
perfect, but certainly an up and comer in the collector car world.
Break out the Aquanet and pop your collar, it's time to just go
back to the 1980's.
