1970s, the gas crunch and new federal regulations effectively
neutered many American muscle cars; however, Pontiacs Firebird was
one of only a handful of performance cars left standing by 1974. By
1974, the Firebird, like all American cars, were required to sport
federally compliant 5-mph bumpers, replacing the invisible, body
colored Endura bumpers of years past. Nonetheless, the Firebird
still looked virile, especially in stealthy GT-style Formula guise.
A true drivers car, the Formula sported a pair of bold hood scoops
up front, a fiberglass hood, and few external adornments for a
particularly clean look in contrast to the racy Trans Am variant.
The V-8 engine choices and available transmissions continued to
provide strong, albeit somewhat milder, performance than before.
Other standard Formula equipment included hubcaps (Honeycomb and
Rally II wheels optional), a special heavy-duty suspension,
black-textured grille finish, dual exhaust system, a custom cushion
steering wheel, and F70-14 tires. This 1974 Pontiac Firebird
Formula 400 is an attractive and well-equipped example with a
44,155 miles believed correct at the time of writing. Finished in
Admiralty Blue paint over a light blue bucket-seat interior, this
Formula benefits from a restoration to OEM specifications, with
power delivered by the matching numbers Pontiac 400 CI V-8 engine
with ram air, mated to a 4-speed manual transmission. Desirable
features and options include air conditioning, an AM/FM radio, and
attractive Honeycomb wheels, plus a console-mounted shift lever.
Documents include the owners manual, sales brochures, emissions and
radio manuals, and a Build Sheet. A spare wheel/tire, roadside jack
and lug wrench are also included. While horsepower was down in 74,
Pontiacs Firebird Formula 400 held the line with excellent
performance, handling, and GT-themed sophistication. See it for
