Old Restoration This is the car credited with starting the Muscle
Car movement by many auto enthusiasts, the 1964 Pontiac GTO. From
the beginning, it was a car that broke the rules and enforced
Pontiac's reputation as the performance-oriented brand of General
Motors. With auto manufacturers banned from active participation in
sanctioned racing activities, Pontiac began an advertising and
marketing campaign stressing street performance. Motors Division
executives, led by John DeLorean, exploited a loophole within
corporate policy at General Motors limiting engine size in
mid-sized lines to 330 cubic inches proposing an option allowing
the 389 cubic inch engine from the Bonneville and Catalina lines
between the frame rails of the mid-sized LeMans as an option. While
upper management at Pontiac approved the plan, it hedged its bets
by limiting initial production to a mere 5,000 units. Public
response was much greater than had been anticipated and year-end
sales totaled over 32,000 units. Only 6,644 convertibles were
produced, accounting for only two percent of total production. This
award-winning 1964 Pontiac GTO convertible was built the second
week of May 1964 at the Pontiac, MI assembly plant. It was treated
to a frame-off restoration in 1992 and won the convertible class at
the GTO Nationals in Lincolnshire, IL that same year. Finished in
the correct Gulfstream Aqua with the correct black bucket seat
interior and black top, this is a highly optioned vehicle with
factory power steering, power brakes and air conditioning. Power
comes from a 389 cubic inch engine topped with three two-barrel
carbs and has a console-shifted two-speed automatic transmission.
Proper redline tires and deluxe spinner hubcaps, both part of the
GTO option package, are present with this outstanding vehicle. This
car has been a part of the current owner's portfolio for over 15
years and been stored during that time in a humidity-controlled
environment. The almost 30 year old restoration has aged very well
and presents in excellent condition. This would make a great
addition for any GTO collection and would be a fantastic vehicle
for someone starting to build a collection.
