Vehicle Description
2001 Ford Mustang Bullitt
Bullitt is a 1968 American action thriller film directed by Peter
Yates and produced by Philip D'Antoni. The picture stars Steve
McQueen, Robert Vaughn, and Jacqueline Bisset. The screenplay by
Alan R. Trustman and Harry Kleiner was based on the 1963 novel Mute
Witness. In the movie there is a nearly 11 minute chase scene in
which McQueen rumbles through various streets of San Francisco in a
green 1968 Mustang Fastback, and the rest is history.
Fast forward to 2001 where we have a New Edge style Mustang,
painted Dark Highland Green and put together as a tribute to this
1968 classic and the chase scene in the movie. For consignment, a
one owner 2001 Mustang Bullitt. This is number 5211 of 5582 units
produced, is able to output 265 hp, and has 76,229 used but not
abused original miles. Compared to today's Mustangs, even the V6
can produce more horsepower due to technological advances. Complete
with all of its documentation including the window sticker, Bullitt
promotional items, 1 year of production, low numbers and a retro
interior, it's destined to be a classic. Get it while it's hot!
Exterior
Nice straight rust-free steel panels with their gaps very
consistent, all bathed in Dark Highland Green. This smoothed over
designed New Edge bodied version has body matching integrated
bumpers, a hood scoop, the throwback to the choicely stick cove in
the sides, and nicely rounded fastback rear glass which melts into
the small rear deck with an added gloss black rear spoiler. The
only trimmings present on this car are all black and only around
the glass which is tinted. Up front we note the addition of a
2003/2004 Mach 1 chin spoiler along with functional fog lights. On
back the trio cluster of taillights still persists and dual exhaust
now protrudes from the bottom of the rear roll pan. Bullitt badging
as well as a simple GT on the front quarter is literally the only
bling on this car, save for the galloping horse on the grille and
BULLITT letter on the trunk lid and the added white rocker stripe.
17-inch gray powder coated 5 spoke wheels are on all 4 corners and
the galloping horse also appears on the red brake calipers. Last is
a special body flush gas filler cap. I'm green with envy of the
retro throwback paint color.
Interior
A swing of the doors and Huey Lewis and the News' "Back in Time"
could be playing as the tributes to 1968 hits just keep on coming.
Retro styled seats with rounded tuck and roll inserts and nice
smooth oversized grabber sided buckets are noted inside for the
driver and passenger, all covered in charcoal gray leather. In back
a 2 plus 2 with the same pattern also in leather. Color fade and
age wrinkling is noted on the bolsters of the front buckets, but no
tearing is evident. The center console also in charcoal gray is
ergonomically rounded just like the seats and exterior design. The
dash which has been beautifully molded with now very rounded over
twin eyebrows all in charcoal is yet another tribute to the early
versions. So are the round gauges in the dash setup; only these
take on a contemporary flair. A nicely padded rally steering with
galloping steed in the center has touch controls to make things
just a bit more convenient. In the center of this dash are the
climate controls, and an AM/FM/6 CD radio, and of course the round
metal knob topped shifter. Black carpeting and black headliner are
above and below, and these are also in very good condition.
Drivetrain
Under the hood appears very nice with only minor corrosion on a few
untreated surfaces along with supple wires and hoses and all clean
under here. Within this ready to roll space is an original 4.6
Liter SOHC V8 with EFI capable of 265hp. On the back is a Tremec
3650 5-speed manual transmission coupled with a Ford 8.8-inch 3.27
Trac-Loc rear axle.
Undercarriage
Mostly rust free and dirt free surfaces and unibody structure. I'm
seeing green sprayed well-kept floor pans, shiny exhaust, and just
a little surface rust on cast suspension and drivetrain pieces. In
front which has been lowered 3/4 inches from the standard GT,
sports independent coil springs, and on back a 4 link with coil
springs. Power 13-inch disc brakes the front with dual piston red
painted galloping pony adorned calipers, and on back 11.6-inch rear
rotors courtesy of the SVT Cobra. A Flowmaster cat-back exhaust
system has been added but our consignor retained the original
exhaust, and has it included with the purchase.
Drive-Ability
A turn of the key and you have one of the nicest sounding exhaust
tones you'll hear, here at Classic Auto Mall. Here Here! Anyway, I
digress, and off to the test track where it has a nice
acceleration, good handling and on a dime stopping which is bias
free no matter how hard you push the pedal in. All working and just
a comfy retro interior. The interior fitted me, who is slightly
portly, as well as my pudgy and well-fed crack decoder and muscle
car aficionado, both were very comfy, although when he drives, I
always have to grab the Jesus bar!
All in all a very nicely preserved, fully documented version of the
retro Bullitt and its star Steve McQueen. I can fantasize about
dodging in and out of cable cars and becoming airborne in those
hilly streets of San Francisco. ...Rice a Roni...A San Francisco
treat! Cue the Bullitt.
