Vehicle Description
1970 Chevrolet Malibu Chevelle
The storied Chevelle is one of those timeless designs that looks
good no matter how it's built. Stock, modified, race, pro-touring,
whatever; the clean lines and balanced stance on these tough
classics create a confident swagger that's universally admired.
That means, if you're looking to ride in style, you really can't go
wrong with a Chevrolet A-Body.
A project car for the hardcore enthusiast who wants to make a car
truly his/her own. New metal all around, most of the trimmings
included and the start to interior make for the beginnings of
something special. Named after the beach front town sharing its
namesake and originally settled by the Chumash indians, whose
territory extended loosely from the San Joaquin valley to San Luis
Obispo to Malibu. They named it "Humaliwo", or "the surf sounds
lovely". Now residing right here on the east coast at Classic Auto
Mall and awaiting your artful touch to bring this beauty back to
its former glory.
Exterior
Finished in satin black with a mix of various color sheet metal
panels, this beauty to be is sporting new metal from AMD in the
form of full rear quarter panels, fenders, inner and outer wheel
houses, the passenger door, pillar posts and even the rockers. An
AMD roof is also on but is just set over top of the original roof
which will need replacing. Close inspection shows an unfinished job
with Cleco fasteners holding some of the panels on and only partial
spot welds performed. This allows for laser straight alignment of
the gaps before finish welding is performed. Our consignor states
that all trimmings and glass are included with the car save for the
tail lights and windshield. Shiny chrome makes up the bumpers both
front and rear meanwhile 15" deep dish rally wheels hold the 4
corners to the ground.
Interior
Looking inside we see door panels that are showing their age and
have a distinct waviness to them. The armrests, releases and cranks
have all been removed. The front buckets are covered in vinyl as
well, and have a tucked roll and flat black vinyl which makes for
an interesting and sporty design. The rear bench is original and
presents in the same pattern as the front buckets while resting
underneath totes of parts. The carpeting has been removed exposing
the solid steel flooring and fronting the seating area is an
unrestored original dash which has a Midland aftermarket
AM/FM/Cassette radio, and a padded black topper above. Racing
between the buckets is a black plastic console with a gearshift
like the throttle on the Starship Enterprise dripping with aircraft
nuance.
Drivetrain
Upon lifting the hood we are met with an unfinished engine bay that
holds within a 1970 307ci V8, which is quite possibly the original
engine. A TH350 3-speed automatic and a 10-bolt rear are noted. A
2bbl carburetor is on top of this unfinished mill and we note the
lack of inner fender liners, power steering being present, and we
note that this was once an AC equipped vehicle.
Undercarriage
Rust free with a dash of patina is what greets us up in the air. A
new AMD trunk pan has been installed and we note rust free flooring
in a gray and black finish along with a surface rusted frame. Coil
springs with an independent suspension up front, and coil springs
with 4 link suspension are on the rear. Disc brakes are the front
stopping power and in the back, we note drum brakes for the
whoa.
A great Chevrolet Malibu project car with the majority of the hard
work and expenses already handled for you. While not a turnkey car,
the possibilities are endless as to the finished product, show
stopper or street beast...why not both?
