Vehicle Description
1967 Chevrolet Chevelle SS396
Drag racing seems like it's been with us forever. In truth it's a
postwar phenomenon, with roots stretching back to the dry lakebed
racing in Southern California in the 1930's. From those humble
beginnings to modern times, when a modern Top Fueler can go 0-1000
feet in a tick over 3 seconds at speeds topping 330mph....we've
come a long way baby!
For consignment, we have a one of best looking model year Chevelles
to ever roll down the Chevrolet assembly lines, now a race car that
has been modified to the hilt to go as fast as possible in a
straight line. Even from new this car served as a race car.
Competing in many less than legal street races throughout the years
then tucked away in a garage in 1976 then being rescued by our
consignor, the 2nd owner. Read on and get your adrenaline
pumping!
Exterior
The Chevrolet Chevelle looks like it's going fast standing still,
almost like the designers had racing in mind when this body was
penned. Dipped in red with a pastel purple encased side stripe that
starts white then fades through the spectrum before matching the
rest of the body in red, this steel and fiberglass 1/4 miler means
business. The hood and its integrated scoop are fiberglass while
pinned in the front, use an unconventional method of retention to
the hinges via bolts right through fiberglass. Nicely preserved
chrome and trim very shiny and mirror-like is noted on the bumpers
and all trim and molding pieces that are still on the car. On the
rear of this car are corner wrap-around taillights that have a
lettered black panel in between them which floats above the bumper.
A large hood scoop sits atop the center rear of the hood and a body
side matching stripe starts atop this scoop and runs rearward over
the roof and down the trunk of this racer. This scoop is also ready
to suck in all the air the engine needs along with any errant birds
or small children who get too close. Weld Draglite wheels round out
the package on all 4 corners. Keeping with traditional drag racing
form, the skinnies are in the front and monster fatties are in the
rear. We note the rear quarter panels have been radiused to accept
the huge rear meats and the side to side stance is canted to the
passenger's side in the front.
Interior
With a swing of the doors you are met with door panels in black
vinyl which have horizontal stitched tucked roll panels, some
chrome trimmings and are in very good condition. Inside high black
racing buckets with black and red vinyl covers replace the former
front bench seat, in the rear the seating is gone and replaced with
sheet metal panels to accommodate the large rear tires. A roll cage
provides a safety halo should things get topsy turvy and all this
floats in beautiful black carpeting. On the center of the hump is a
tall T-handle top long armed Hurst shift lever in the perfect
position. The dash is all original but has been stripped of the
knob for the lights, ignition, and wipers being on the top of the
gauge cluster. A right side mounted aftermarket tachometer hangs on
the steering column and the driver's wheel is a 3 spoke heavy
metallic red plastic unit. A gaggle of switches has been installed
in the dash center along with a trio of gauges below. A big howdy
to the trunk which has been completely redone with large wheel tubs
and now holds the fuel cell and battery box.
Drivetrain
Lifting the lightweight hood and massive hood scoop we are met with
the factory engine bay holding within an era correct but not
original engine. This consignor stated freshly rebuilt V8 engine
weighs in at 396ci V8 now bored to 408ci of big block Chevrolet
power. This massive mill is a consignor stated 4-bolt main and has
had an L88 solid lifter camshaft installed. Sitting atop this block
are a pair of 1969 rectangle port iron cylinder heads and feeding
this mighty mill is a single Holley 850cfm 4bbl carburetor. Backing
this up is a circa 1966/1967 Muncie M20 4-speed manual
transmission. The power is put to the ground via a Dana 60 rear
axle that is equipped with 4.77 gears and Positraction.
Undercarriage
Upfront an independent coil spring suspension is on and in back
ladder bars with coil overs. Drum brakes are seen all around, and
we see a Holley blue pump hanging at the rear of the car. Silver
snakelike headers rain down from the mighty mill and run back to
stainless steel mufflers that end just behind the transmission.
Drive-Ability
We lit this candle up and it was wheels up to the test track. To
state the obvious, it takes off like a rocket ship, shifts
smoothly, and goes very well in a straight line. It's actually a
good driver too for those non competition jaunts, yes folks, its
"street legal".
A rare ride to begin with, used as a racer since day one and having
only accumulated 12,821 title verified miles. With a freshly
rebuilt engine and 1/4 mile looks its now time to get in, strap on
the belts, and get ready for a late night of running down the
competition.
