Vehicle Description
1956 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing Recreation by Tony Ostermeier
with Just 10k Miles: Widely Known as the Best 300SL Gullwing
Recreation Ever BuiltThis stunning 300SL Gullwing Recreation was
built by former Mercedes-Benz employee Anton 'Tony' Ostermeier,
whose Gullwing Car Company was based in Gardena, California.
Ostermeier's Gullwings were built on a modern Mercedes-Benz W124
300E chassis and thus featured modern Mercedes running gear
including a fuel-injected 3.0 liter inline-6 engine, automatic
transmission, as well as modern suspension and brakes. They also
had air conditioning making them very practical road cars. The
moulds were made from the body of an original 300SL Gullwing to
ensure accuracy, while the panels were made of aluminium reinforced
with fiberglass and steel. Indeed, Obermeier's remanufactured
components were of such high quality and accuracy that they have
been used on authentic 300 SL coup?s and roadsters. Silver with red
full leather interior, this particular example is gorgeous inside
and out. The look and aesthetic of the car are shockingly accurate.
Even the seasoned enthusiast would peg this as a genuine 300SL
based on a quick walk around the car. It's in beautiful condition
and the attention to detail is extremely high. The interior is
quite accurate as well, although it does give a few clues as to
what lies beneath the skin, including a wood-rimmed Nardi steering
wheel, air conditioning vents, and the automatic transmission shift
lever. The engine starts instantly and runs smoothly. The power
steering makes for easy maneuverability and the power-assisted
brakes are very capable. Mechanically excellent, this Gullwing
drives like an absolute dream. This is a very rare opportunity to
acquire a car that captures the stunning presence of the 300SL
Gullwing and at a small fraction of the cost of an original.
Finding one of these for sale can take years. Impressively accurate
in its presentation, the car is effortless and modern to drive,
making it ideal for anyone seeking to enjoy the aesthetic
experience of the Gullwing as often as possible. Built by Anton
