In early 1959, Willys introduced the "Jeep Gala" to fleet and
export markets desiring the nimble size and open bodywork, but no
need for four wheel drive. This model gained popularity as a "fun
car" at resorts in Hawaii, Mexico, and islands in the Caribbean. It
was finished in pink, green, or blue, and trimmed in matching white
striped fabric, as well as fringe on its top. This beautiful
cerulean blue example, recently refinished in a darker blue than
original, was lovingly-kept by one owner from 1961 until 2020.
According to records, a group of Los Angeles Times dealers attended
a corporate-sponsored trip to Hawaii in 1961, where approximately
20 Jeep Surreys were available for use during their stay. These
guests were offered the opportunity to purchase the vehicles at the
end of their trip - with shipment back to the mainland. The owner
and his family personally used this Surrey for nearly 40 years in
California, and upon his passing, this Jeep was given new life by
another family member who restored the classic charm of the car.
With many books, records, and spare parts included, this 1960
Willys Surrey is a wonderful driver-quality example in excellent
condition.
