Vehicle Description
This 1964 Ford Fairlane Thunderbolt is a tribute to the rare
lightweight examples that Ford sold a mere 100 units. This one not
only gets the details right, but the dual-quad 427 V8 also means
it's still king of the strip. So as you look over the care that has
gone into making an exceptionally accurate tribute, remember how
much fun you can have in this one without putting down $300k for an
original.
If you're looking at this, then you already know the legend of the
Thunderbolt: 100 hand-built Fairlines made to capture the 1964 NHRA
Super Stock championship. These cars were built in a very specific
way, and so you need to know what to look for in the details.
Wimbledon White was only one of two colors these came in, and so
it's great to have it looking bright and clean. The stock look
means full-length trim and the hallmark afterburner-style tail
lights. But this car was not over-restored to be a glamour machine.
You can see it is meant to be used as a blacktop king. After all,
no Thunderbolt is complete without ram air vents in place of high
beams. These cars were also an exercise in weight savings, so
you'll also see details like the fiberglass trunk, and there's the
fiberglass hood with the teardrop power dome that allows for the
heat to dissipate. Plus, the stance is awesome with skinny
competition-style wheels up front with narrower tires, and the rear
has a classic-style set of Hoosiers and is tubbed to add plenty
more rubber if you really want a dragstrip machine.
Just like the exterior, the interior is all about authenticity for
racing. So non-essential items like the radio and heater are
deleted. But you still feel a sense of value because there's a
freshness inside that instantly conveys the time and money spent on
this car. So you have the smoothly painted dash, detailed door
panels, a nice headliner, loop carpeting, and wide bench seats with
a touch of tuck and roll flair. The thin steering wheel has that
ideal classic grip, but the auxiliary readouts under the dash let
you know this is something extra special. And the SunPro tach
prominently mounted on top of the dash is like a vintage head-up
display.
Under the hood is what really makes this so special. The
Thunderbolts were all about stuffing the full-size motor into a
lighter and smaller car. So you get a proper 427 cubic-inch
side-oiler V8. We were even told it was recently rebuilt with a
stroker kit for added power and displacement. While unconfirmed, it
does have a clean style that reaffirms the feeling of a big recent
investment. The fresh air tubes feed the large air grabber, and it
needs to be that long because feeding this big motor are dual
Holley four-barrel carburetors. The full custom crossover header
package also adds power while creating a ferocious growl. It's a
powerful package, and so you have a strong C6 three-speed automatic
transmission. Making sure the muscle meets the pavement are
upgrades like the reinforced four-link rear, adjustable coilovers,
and a stout 9-inch diff. You'll also see the right power car
upgrades like a reinforced chassis and front disc brakes.
Complete with build receipts, this is the tribute that offers all
the fun of the original at a fraction of the price. Don't miss this
