Vehicle Description
2002 Ford Thunderbird Roadster
Ford revived more than an American icon when it boldly resurrected
its unique Thunderbird sports/personal car for 2002. It also, as
events would have it, reprised an historic Motor Trend Car of the
Year win. Our forefathers here named the '58 T-Bird-the first of
the larger, four-seat versions-as Car of the Year, hailing "the
overall concept...that combines safety with performance and comfort
with compactness.". For 2002, we're happy to bestow that honor
again, recognizing today's Thunderbird for how it combines heritage
with modernity and pleasure with practicality.
For consignment, a first year retro, low mileage, (35,317), fully
equipped car. This car presents in very nice condition with the
usual blemishes one would expect on a car from 2002 with 35K miles
on it. A hardtop and soft top version so you can drive it and have
fun year-round and a hardtop cart and a boot cover for when the top
is down.
Exterior
Torch Red loudly announces its presence and shouts out it is in
very nice condition with straight steel, and well minded gaps. A
black canvas power convertible top, in very good condition, raises
and lowers quickly and effortlessly with only minor staining of the
canvas. If you want more protection, put on the available hard top
complete with the harken back to the 50's porthole window, and
lightly smoked glass on either side and brave the elements. This
hard top is also Torch Red...let me go get a fire extinguisher.
Retro styling cues are seen throughout in the chrome eggcrate
grille, fog lights that emulate the dagmars of yore, a simple hood
scoop and those sexy rocket style taillights. Chrome cast aluminum
wheels are noted on all 4 corners and are wrapped in newer
blackwall 17" tires.
Interior
The dual bucket interior in black and torch red leather, wraps
numerous surfaces, with only the buckets showing slight age
wrinkling on the smooth bolsters. No errors here on the carpet,
headliner of the hardtop, or dash surfaces. White faced gauges with
black numbers and indicators are embedded into the curvaceous dash
and are fronted by an original steering wheel. Dual temp zones, an
AM/FM/6 CD stereo, power seats, power locks, and power windows,
along with a tilt and extending steering wheel column are some of
the options on this highly appointed car. Even the door panels get
into the retro action with a mix of smooth black plastic, ribbed
black vinyl and a torch red vinyl insert all looking good.
Drivetrain
A 3.9 Liter Dual Overhead Cam V8 sits within a clean engine bay.
This is attached to a 5R55N 5-speed automatic transmission that
shifts quietly and smoothly. A 3.58 conventional rear axle is on
the back.
Undercarriage
Clean rust free and structurally sound no problems here. We can
note 4-wheel independent Macpherson strut suspension, 4-wheel power
disc brakes with ABS, and dual exhaust with what appear to be the
original mufflers. The only flaws that appear are some splashed
road dirt and a few scrapes on the black X-bracing, otherwise its
miles of Torch Red rust-free steel.
Drivability
A quick starting procedure and on the test track this car performs
beautifully. No issues crept up on my drive and all functions
performed swimmingly. A true pleasure to drive.
A first-year reintroduction Bird with some nifty chrome wheels, low
miles, in Torch Red, with a hardtop attachment, and a soft top.
Talk about fun all year round. Yours for the taking, and you better
act fast since I've always carried a torch for these retro
rides.
