In 1965, Porsche released the car that would put them on the map
and build the legacy of Porsche that is today: the Porsche 911.
With the first models offered in 1965, these new coupes were a huge
change for Porsche. With a winning combination of light-weight,
newly designed suspension, and more power from the new 6-cylinder
engines, the 911 became an instant icon.
According to the Porsche Kardex, this Slate Grey 911 completed
production on July 19th, 1965.
This car was originally purchased in 1965 by Robert H. Loeffler. He
was a military police detective stationed in Frankfurt Germany at
the time. At the end of his station, he moved back home to
Tennessee where the car had ended up in storage and left stowed
away for over 30 years. In 2013 the car was purchased by John
Willhoit who saw the potential in the forgotten legend. During the
course of the restoration, the vehicle was purchased by noted car
guy Paul Zuckerman who continued to have Willhoit restore the car
until its completion in 2017.
The car is as per the Kardex except for a few well thought out
mechanical upgrades. The originally 2.0 liter flat-six engine was
bumped up to 2.4 liter for a substantial increase in power. The
original heads were modified to early 911S specs and Solex cams
along with turbo chain 930 tensioners were introduced to the
vehicle as well. The car was dyno-tested and recorded a max output
of 181hp and 171lb/ft making it noticeably quicker than the
original. A blank case trans was also fitted to this 911 in
addition to short ratio gears and a limited-slip differential which
assists the car in utilizing its increased power while also
allowing for better cornering and handling. The old braking system
was upgraded with a dual circuit brake master cylinder system. To
add on top of this the Nadella axels were replaced with Lobro
types, turbo tie rod ends and Koni shocks were installed to give
this car advanced handling and ride quality.
Upon arrival at Canepa, this early-series Porsche 911 was inspected
from front to back. Bruce noted on his initial test drive that this
car had an incredible amount of torque which translated to an
awesome driving experience. Through the "Canepa Difference"
process, the entire car was mechanically inspected, ensuring it was
the best it can be. Then a meticulous concours-level detail
followed, ensuring that no stone was unturned and that every
surface was cleaned, including underneath, its interior, trunk, and
engine bay. A very light foam-pad polish enhanced the luster of the
Slate Grey paint, producing a show-quality finish. Bruce also
decided to swap the original wheels with early "Deep 6" Fuchs alloy
wheels wrapped in new Pirelli Cinturato (185/70 VR15) CN36 radial
tires to enhance the look and further improve the handling a step
further (original wheels available upon request). The restored full
leather interior with wood accent dash has the simple charm of
early 911s, with the astonishing Slate Grey paint finish accenting
the curves of this Porsche. The opportunity to experience an
early-series 911 is a rare occasion, and what better way to do it
than in a car that has been professionally restored and looked
over.
