first production turbodiesel sedan? Check out this Mercedes-Benz
300 SD sedan at MotoeXotica Classic Cars. We purchased this
pristine example from the widow of Mr. Brenner who purchased the
car new on 11/4/78. He passed away in 9/2011. The car has always
been garaged and properly maintained from new and it shows. Built
in Sindelfingen, West Germany on September 25, 1978, this car was
originally purchased on November 3, 1978 at International Motor Car
Company located in Kirkwood, Missouri, a St. Louis suburb, by Roger
B. from Quincy, Illinois. The car received a new battery and a new
starter on June 21 this year at 36,200 miles. Additionally we have
the original Illinois title in his name and correct title in his
wife's name after the passing. Dressed in Blue (code 903), the
car?s paint and trim are in overall very good order and no
paintwork was detected. The bodywork is solid and straight, the
doors close with the typical M-B bank vault solidity, the car?s
trunk is in fine shape and the chrome bumpers look great. The
underside of the car is pristine and has been professionally dry
ice cleaned to show off its detail as well as the engine
compartment. The A/C blows, but not cold. The power antenna is inop
and ta auxiliary started button was installed. This Benz rides on
Michelin XH4 radials, size 185/75R14 at every corner. Each tire is
mounted to a vented, alloy wheel. The tires are in older order
while the wheels are in very good, original condition. Under the
hood is a 3.0L SOHC, 10-valve, five-cylinder diesel engine.
Modifications for production engines included oil squirters to cool
the underneath of the pistons; pistons with oil passages; stronger
connecting rods; sodium filled valve stems and a stronger
nitride-hardened crankshaft. Also, an uprated oil pump with
separate chain drive was fitted as the turbocharger lubrication
required higher flow. Bosch MW injection pumps were calibrated for
greater fuel output and fitted with an ALDA device which prevented
over-fueling until the Garrett turbocharger had begun to provide
boost pressure. Pencil glow plugs were provided on all OM617A
engines. The OM617 is considered to be one of the most reliable
engines ever produced with engines often reaching over 620,000
miles without being rebuilt and is one of the key reasons for
Mercedes? popularity in North America in the 1980s, as it was
powerful and reliable compared to other automotive diesels of the
time. It is also a very popular choice for the use of alternative
fuels, mainly straight or waste vegetable oil and biodiesel. This
inline-five diesel engine was developed from the C111 experimental
vehicle. Backing this oil-burner is a four-speed automatic
transmission (722.1) and a 3.07:1 rear end. Driver convenience
features include air-conditioning, power steering, power brakes,
power windows, cruise control and a sunroof. Inside, the tan
leather front buckets and rear bench seats are in overall excellent
condition, the tan carpet is in very good shape, as is the
headliner. A four-spoke steering wheel faces the driver. The
instrument panel, with its VDO gauges and inner door panels, are
all in very good order. The center console and shift lever echo
that appearance and a Becker Europa II AM/FM stereo completes the
car?s interior. This car had its first maintenance, an oil change,
at 713 miles, on November 10, 1978. By September 14, 1979, the car
had racked up 3,863 miles. On October 15, 1985, the car had 9,980
miles; exactly a year later, the car had 11,110 miles. A notepad
has four hand-written maintenance intervals, starting at April 29,
1997 at 22,268 miles to November 2, 2010 at 32,900 miles. More
intervals are listed in other documents ? December 5, 2009 at
32,635 miles to December 14, 2010 at 33,654 miles. The W116 S-Class
incorporated a broad variety of Mercedes-Benz safety innovations.
Four-wheel anti-lock brakes were first featured as an option on the
1978 W116 S-Class. This system prevents the wheels from locking
while braking. The system improves steering control during hard
braking situations, and to shorten brake distances Strengthened
body structure. The W116 featured a more stable security passenger
cell with a stiffened roof frame structure. High strength roof and
door pillars, along with other reinforced zones, provided enhanced
vehicle occupant protection Deformation zones (crumple zones) in
the front and rear A padded dashboard, deformable switches and
controls, and a four-spoke steering wheel with impact absorber and
broad impact cushion aimed to reduce occupant injury during
collisions The fuel tank was no longer fitted at the rear end but
was now placed above the rear axle for added protection Wraparound
turn signals made it easier to communicate with nearby drivers
Competition to this Mercedes in 1979 included BMW?s 7-series,
Buick?s Electra, Cadillac?s Sedan de Ville and Seville, Chrysler?s
New Yorker, Lincoln?s Continental, Mercury?s Grand Marquis and
Oldsmobile?s 98. Documentation includes original owner?s manual,
original maintenance booklet, original owner?s emissions control
manual, original owner?s warranty and maintenance plan, a M-B
leather pouch with a spare key, a notepad listing four maintenance
intervals, various maintenance and part receipts and more. If
