Vehicle Description
1967 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible
Pro Street is a style of street-legal custom car, usually built for
drag racing. Cars of this type typically feature a narrowed rear
axle coupled with oversized rear tires for maximum grip and a large
capacity V8 engine often supercharged. A specific type of race car,
typically American muscle cars. This class of vehicles are highly
tuned, intended for pro-class races, but still have the ability to
be street-legal (that they have proper safety features, lights and
signals, and depending on jurisdictions, keep within a specified
weight-to-horsepower ratio).
This street legal, drag race looker with miles deep paint and
engine changed Camaro is a real head turner. Whether it's the noise
it produces for your ears or your eyes, it is almost like you
cannot look away. Blending all the looks of Pro Street, the top
that goes down, and an updated monstrous drivetrain we have a
looker and a cooker at our fingertips. Strap in and hold on, it's
gonna be a fast ride!
Exterior
Straight steel panels are covered in an application of Black and
the paint shows in the deep end of the pool and gray stripes start
on the header panel and race across the hood and end at the base of
the trunk mounted spoiler. A low-profile rearward facing hood scoop
is on and the exterior stripped of most badging save for the basic
Camaro on the front fenders. A thin chrome bumper leads the way up
front and hovers below a black eggcrate grille which is flanked on
either side by LED headlamps and holds the correct marker lights
within. A gray canvas convertible top has been installed and looks
fab with only a few wrinkles and a clear plastic rear window.
Chrome moldings surround the windshield and base of the top
providing some extra bling. More stainless is on highlighting the
wheel openings and are joined by a simple chrome rocker spear. A
small rear wind rear wing is bolted and just underneath are the
standard inset tail lamps with shiny bezels and a chrome bumper
below. Billet Specialties wheels in 15" format are on all 4 corners
with 26X6.00 tires in the front and massive 29X18.0 tires on the
rear. A shout out to the nicely carpeted trunk which holds both the
battery and a fuel cell.
Interior
A swing of the door and we are met with beautifully customized door
panels in black padded vinyl with veritcal tuck and roll stitching
plus some billet for the armrest, cranks and knobs. Black and white
houndstooth vinyl and cloth bucket seats float in a sea of black
carpet with smooth bolsters and beautiful white houndstooth appears
in the inserts with a tuck and roll pattern. The rear 2+2 bench
seat has been narrowed to make space for the large tire tubs while
still providing room for one and a roll cage with some carbon fiber
wrap keeps the driver and passenger safe in case of a whoopsie
going down the track. The factory dash has been retained but a
speedometer and tachometer by Autometer now replace the factory
instrumentation. Moving to the center of the dash we have more
Autometer gauges to monitor engine vitals along with an AM/FM/CD
player by Alpine and a row of covered toggle switches. A Kilduff
shifter with 4 black ball topped levers sits on the center of the
hump and is surrounded by nice black carpeting.
Drivetrain
Underneath the scooped hood resides a 454ci V8 now displacing 468ci
complete with a steel crank, TRW rods and pistons and a double
roller timing set. Cast iron oval port open chamber heads were
treated to a 3-angle valve job and back cutting for better flow
before being bolted to the mill. An 850cfm Holley carburetor sends
the proper air and fuel mixture to the engine via a Weiand intake
manifold. A TH400 3-speed automatic transmission with a 3800rpm
stall converter sends power back to a narrowed Ford 9" Positraction
axle with 4.11 gears. Copious amounts of chrome and polished
aluminum are on in this engine bay and complete the dressed to the
nines look perfectly.
Undercarriage
A black painted factory unibody, narrowed rear frame section and
sheet metal floors give this car its backbone. All is clean and
rust free, the way we like it. A tubular coil spring front
suspension is on in front while a ladder bar setup with coilovers
is on the rear with both sets of coilovers being adjustable.
Wilwood power disc brakes provide the stopping power while power
steering allows navigation with ease. Headers send spent fossils
through Flowmaster mufflers and out from under the body just in
front of the rear tires.
Drivability
I was off for a pedicure and foot soak when the drive time came due
for this car, so my partner in crime took the wheel and fired back
his report. A twist of the key and a press of the button at the
front of the shifter console and the car roared to life. He
reported back that the acceleration was limitless all the while
cruising with the top down and the wind in his hair. Steering was
smooth and the Wilwood brakes made for bias free braking in record
time. A wonderful performer and thanks to the houndstooth covered
seats you stay well planted and comfortable even during the hardest
gooses of the throttle.
A well-built and fully sorted Pro Streeter here for the taking.
Miles deep paint, a comfortable custom interior and a near racing
capable drivetrain make for a car that can be driven to and from
shows or taken to the track to put a spanking on some unsuspecting
Mustangs. But better hurry because like all good things, this won't
last!
