For Sale: 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air in St. Louis, Missouri

Vehicle Description

1955 Chevrolet Bel-Air two-door sedan Debut model year for second-generation Bel-Airs 265 CID V-8 engine with dual exhausts Three-speed Synchro-Mesh manual transmission and 3.70 gearing Seamist Green over Neptune Green Metallic exterior (code 599) Green cloth and vinyl interior (code 510) Clock, pushbutton AM radio, tissue dispenser, Dinsmore Compass, traffic light viewer and windshield washer Same Oklahoma owner since 2001, 21 years! Chevrolet called it the ?Hot One? in its advertising literature but to the neighbors, having a Bel-Air in the driveway gave you status. You could afford the top-of-the-line Chevrolet with Cadillac touches. This example was made in General Motors? Leeds factory in Kansas City, Missouri (VIN code K). Dressed in Seamist Green over Neptune Green Metallic (code 599), this would have been the perfect car for George McFly to take Lorraine to the Under the Sea Dance at Mill Valley High School in 1955. The car?s paint and trim are in great condition overall, with only the tiniest blemishes visible at close range. The bodywork is solid and straight while the engine bay is very tidy. The car?s chrome bumpers with bumper guards fit tightly to the body. This Bel-Air rolls on wide whitewall, bias-ply tires, size 6.70-15 at every corner. Each tire is mounted on a steel wheel topped with a factory wheel cover. The tires and wheels are all in good, original order. Under the hood is the engine that saved Chevrolet, the 265 CID V-8, ending the marque?s long run as a straight six-cylinder-only car maker. This motor is mated to a Synchro-Mesh three-speed manual transmission and backed by a 3.70:1 rear end. Driver convenience features are limited to optional equipment ? clock, pushbutton AM radio, a tissue dispenser beneath the dash, a Dinsmore Compass, traffic light viewer and windshield washer. Inside, the green cloth and vinyl interior (code 510) is in overall very good order. The front and rear bench seats look great, as does the matching full-cabin carpet and headliner. A three-spoke steering faces the driver and frames an arcing speedometer. Wipers are inop. The speedo glass is spider-webbed with cracks. The rest of the metal dash, painted Neptune Green Metallic, looks great and evokes the appropriate period stylings. The inner door panels are in good, original condition while a column-mounted shifter and a factory AM radio round out the interior. The Bel-Air received new, revamped styling for the 1955 model year. It weighed 3,456 pounds and was 15 feet long. It was called the ?Hot One? in GM?s advertising campaign. Bel-Airs came with features found on cars in the lower models ranges plus interior carpet, chrome headliner bands on hardtops, chrome spears on front fenders, stainless steel window moldings, full wheel covers and a Ferrari-inspired front grille. Models were further distinguished by the Bel-Air name script in gold lettering later in the year. For 1955 Chevrolets gained a V-8 engine option and the option of the two-speed Powerglide automatic, or a standard three speed Synchro-Mesh manual transmission with optional overdrive. The new 265 V-8 featured a modern, overhead valve high compression ratio, short stroke design that was so good that it remained in production in various displacements for many decades. Warning lights replaced gauges for the generator and oil pressure. This was not the first Chevrolet to be installed with a V-8 engine; that one was introduced in 1917 and called the Series D, which was built for two years, and was manufactured before Chevrolet joined General Motors. The 1955 Bel-Air was very well received. Motor Trend magazine gave the Bel-Air top marks for handling. Popular Mechanics reported acceleration for a V-8 Bel-Air with Powerglide as being 0-60 mph in 12.9 seconds, plus a comfortable ride and good visibility. Front legroom was 43.1 inches, brakes were 11-inch drums. Competition to this Bel-Air in 1955 was fierce, Dodge?s Coronet, Ford?s Fairlane, Hudson?s Hornet Super Six, Plymouth?s Belvedere and Pontiac?s Star Chief. If you?re Tri-Five hunting, they don?t get much better than this ?55 Bel-Air but you had better not loiter or this car will be gone before you can visit. Stop by MotoeXotica Classic Cars today!
