This version of Mercedes's 3.2-liter turbodiesel BlueTEC V-6 uses urea solution injection technology, called AdBlue, to meet even California's tough emissions standards. The ammonia-based fluid reduces nitrogen-oxide levels to the point that the diesel is as clean as the E350's 3.5-liter gasoline V-6. The E-Class represents the middle range among Mercedes-Benz sedans: larger than the entry-level C-Class, but more trim and more practical than the imposing S-Class. Nonetheless, today's E-Class is as big as an S-Class was in the 1970s. The E-Class sedans are big, roomy cars that are solid, safe, practical, comfortable, luxurious, and fast. The E-Class features some of the industry's most advanced safety technology, and it expresses what most people think of when they think of Mercedes: status in an elegant, understated fashion. What's BlueTEC? For 2007 and beyond, diesel-engined cars must meet the same emissions standards as gasoline-engined cars. The problem for automakers is that diesel compliance is more difficult. Diesel engines offer better fuel economy in part because they use a high compression ratio and lean air-fuel ratios. Those characteristics, however, also alter the proportions of the exhaust gases -- carbon monoxide, oxygen, hydrocarbons, and oxides of nitrogen (NOx)--in such a way that they make conventional catalytic converters ineffective at reducing NOx and particulates. The black leather interior is in great shape overall. The five-passenger E-Class sedan provides an airy two-tone cabin, where supple seats and coordinating soft-touch surfaces are complemented by elegant wood inlays, chrome accents and gathered sections of leather on the door panels. The attractive analog instrumentation is generally easy to read, but functions associated with the antiquated COMAND electronics interface remain unintuitive. The black exterior is in great shape, other than a few scuffs on the passenger front fender. No sun fading. Combine the thrust with the E's cushy ride and quality interior surroundings, and you have a heck of a cruiser that provides great fuel economy and an entertaining ride.
