This 1958 Chevrolet Delray 409 lives at the intersection of vintage
hot rod and a true cruiser. After all, you've got a terrific big
block under the hood, but there's also a custom/comfy interior and
an overdrive transmission.
We already are big fans of the '58 Chevy. After all, it's a
single-year design that was built with a wide style to own the
streets. That's why you see the quad headlights and a broad chrome
grille. It's detail-oriented, too, like the way the lower rear
fenders have a tapered crease so that they can meet the line of the
rear bumper. So this car has style. Plus, the bright red paint
likes to set a sporty tone. And it has just the right touch of a
classic street machine. You see it in the smoothie wheels, deleted
badging, and large dual exhaust tips.
The red continues inside, and now it's joined by a tasteful gray.
This is a custom setup with plenty of comfort in mind. You have
velour seats, cup holders, and an AM/FM digital tuner with
cassette. So it's easy to take plenty of people along for the ride
in this full-size Chevy. But you also know the driver is the true
priority with front bucket seats, an armrest center console
in-between, and a custom set of auxiliary readouts.
The 1958 Chevrolet introduced big block power to the cars. The
legendary 409 cubic-inch V8 size was still a few years away when
this one was built, but we now know the engine bay can accept it
with ease. So that's exactly what they did here for this true
street machine style classic. And while you'll like the extra
polish of the valve covers, air grabber, alternator, and more, the
real attraction is that this 409 also inhales deeply with a Holley
four-barrel carburetor. It fires up nicely while making the right
deep tone from the glasspack-style dual exhaust. And it has the
right easy driving features, like an aluminum radiator with
electric fan and a four-speed automatic transmission with
overdrive. This feels good out on the road, especially with wide BF
Goodrich T/As and power brakes.
