1967 Mustang Fastback Pro-Touring, 4.6L Cobra EFI powerplant,
5-speed transmission, custom suspension, A/C, new wiring, 4-wheel
disc brakes, and so much more!
Take a look at this beauty! This Mustang fastback sports a clean
classic look while fitted with modern amenities for a comfortable
ride, excellent handling, and great power.
Starting with a clean, solid 1967 Mustang and a detailed plan to
build the ultimate modernized muscle car capable of driving across
the state comfortably, carving corners on the back roads, and
drawing a crowd wherever its parked, it was finally time to start
the process.
The ground up restoration began in 2009 by stripping the body down
to bare metal, then countless hours were spent blocking and sanding
the sheet metal in preparation for multiple layers of bright red
with white racing stripes. The results are incredible - the color
is very smooth with a glass like, glossy finish that impresses
wherever it goes.
Keeping with the plan, an EFI powerplant was a must - sitting
between the frame rails is an aluminum 4.6L, 32 valve, dual
overhead cam crate engine wearing a factory front accessory drive
including power steering, A/C compressor, remote mounted oil
filter, cold air intake and stock exhaust manifolds. Controlling
this 4.6L engine is a factory Ford ECU and harness making it easy
to change calibration settings using a variety of aftermarket
software systems. This combo is currently tuned to optimize power
and efficiency, so no additional changes are needed. Cooling duties
are handled by an oversized aluminum radiator with both ""pusher""
and ""puller"" electric fans to keep parasitic drag to a minimum
resulting in more horsepower. Bolted to the back of the engine is a
Tremec T45 5-speed manual transmission including overdrive for
those longer cruises and lower engine RPM. The stock 8"" rear axle
was tossed aside in favor of a custom built, late model 8.8"" rear
end fitted with a Traction-Lock differential and 3.73 gears.
A big part of making this fastback handle well, was designing the
suspension using the correct parts from front to rear. Starting up
front, the stock k-member was removed in place of a complete
Heidt's square-tube front suspension system with tubular upper and
lower control arms, power rack and pinion, oversized sway bar, and
QA1 adjustable coil over shocks. Out back is a fully adjustable
4-link set-up with QA1 coil over shocks all bolted to adjustable
links and brackets welded to the very strong 8.8"" axle. This
set-up was designed for maximum tunability. Adding rigidity to the
chassis to reduce flex, a set of frame connectors were installed to
do the job. Stopping power is provided by a 4-wheel disc brake
system with hydro-boost to maximize braking power with minimal
pedal effort.
The stock fuel system was totally removed in place of a brand-new
tank, fuel pump, filter and lines from tank to engine bay utilizing
the stock 4.6L fuel injectors. Spent exhaust gases are sent out
through the factory manifolds connected to a custom 2.5"" true dual
exhaust system with Dynomax mufflers for a nice, deep tone.
The interior has been totally refurbished and looks incredible! All
new black seat covers, door panels, carpet and headliner give a
stock like appearance with a few subtle items like the leather
wrapped steering wheel, center console, and Classic Instruments
gauges provide a few custom touches. All new wiring harnesses were
provided by Ron Francis Wiring Solutions and installed throughout
the car eliminating the worry of bad wiring.
Wheels are Shelby style 18x9.5"" in the rear with 17x8"" up front
wrapped with 285/40/18's and 225/50/17's respectively.
