Made in March 1978 at AMC?s Kenosha West factory in Wisconsin, this survivor is one of the longer station wagon models made after 1977. Miles of 64,336 is understood to be actual, we have no documentation to further back this claim. The car should speak for itself and is highly original and rarely seen. Dressed in Claret (code 8D), the wagon?s paint and trim are in very good original shape while its bodywork is straight and solid. All of the chrome and trim are in original. The rear cargo area is also in satisfactory order. The chrome bumpers also fit tightly to the car?s rounded body. The passenger door is four inches longer than the driver's door on the left side. This made passenger loading easier, particularly from the rear seats; and they would also tend to use the safer curbside in countries that drive on the right. This Pacer rolls on Michelin X white stripe radials, size 205/70R14 all around. Each one is mounted to a steel wheel topped with an original, body-colored wheel cover. Motivation comes from AMC?s tried and true 258 CID inline six-cylinder engine with a two-barrel carburetor and backed by a three-speed automatic transmission. Driver convenience features include air-conditioning (blows cold) and power steering. The Pacer was the second American production car, after the Ford Pinto, to feature rack-and-pinion steering. An entirely fresh approach was also taken by AMC engineers with the Pacer's front suspension and engine mounting. It was the first U.S. small car to isolate the engine and suspension system noises from the passenger compartment. The entire front suspension was mounted on a crossmember isolated from the frame extensions by heavy rubber bushings. It is also different from all other AMC cars with the coil spring between the two control arms, seated on the lower wishbone arm at the bottom and in the suspension/engine mount crossmember at the top. The rear suspension was also isolated, requiring a special tool to press the one-piece bushings in and out of the mounting brackets. Inside, the Claret vinyl interior is in very good overall order. The wide, flat front buckets look sumptuous. The fold-down rear bench is in good order, as is the carpet and headliner. The dashboard is in fine form while the inner door panels are in decent shape. Horn is inop. A two-spoke steering wheel, column-mounted shifter and factory AM/FM radio complete the interior. For increased cargo capacity, a station wagon body style was offered from 1977. The wagon version was only five inches longer and weighed only 76 pounds more than the coupe. It was also a less unusual-looking design with a squared-off back and straight, almost upright, rear side windows. Although front vent windows were optional on all Pacers, the wagon's rear side glass featured vent windows as standard. The broad and rear liftgate opened to a wide, flat cargo area with 47.8 cubic feet of space, significantly easing the task of loading cargo. The rear seat also folded flat to form a continuation of the cargo floor. A more upscale edition, the D/L was available for the entire run of the car and became the base model in 1978. The package originally included "Navajo design" seating fabric and a woodgrain instrument panel as well as some interior features that were otherwise optional. The exterior had additional chrome accents, different wheel covers and identification badging. Competition to this Pacer in 1978 included Chevrolet?s Monza Estate, Ford?s Pinto Squire, Mercury?s Bobcat Villager and Pontiac?s Sunbird Sport Safari.
