By 1940, Packard’s model line had come to include the 110, 120, 160 and 180. Since demand for a V12 had fallen off considerably, Packard dropped it, replacing it with a 160-horsepower engine. This new eight-cylinder motor was introduced as standard equipment and is perhaps Packard’s finest engine.
The 1942 Packard is recognized by its distinctive grill and factory-installed turn signals and electric windshield wipers. In addition, the 1942 Convertible Coupe remains the only traditionally styled Packard with the 127-inch wheelbase. Because its production ended with America’s involvement in WWII, this limited production model remains a very desirable collector car.
This iconic Packard 160 was delivered new to Cleveland, Ohio on July 29, 1942, one of the last produced prior to WWll, as evidenced by the original data tag on the left-side cowl.
The lower cowl tag shows the car was distributed by well-known Packard distributor Earl C. Anthony. From there, we believe it has spent most of its life in California.
This lovely 160 benefitted from a body-on restoration in early 2000, and -- as best as we can tell -- the chassis is mostly original and rust-free. There is no evidence of prior bodywork, and we believe the 66,971 indicated on the odometer is actual.
Enhancing its classic look, 6 new Diamondback radials were also added in 2021.
Recent service included a new stainless gas tank, water pump, electric fuel pump, windshield wiper motor, arms and blades, belts and hoses, spark plugs and wires. To make driving even easier, an electronic ignition was added. All gauges are clear, and everything works on the car except the clock.
It was previously owned by Packard experts Chuck Mitchell and Tom Mix. Chuck had the engine rebuilt by R & R Engine and Machine Shop in 2012 and immediately embarked on the 2000-mile CCCA Montana Caravan with no issues. The Packard was then sold to Glenn Streeter and finally to the current owners.
Both the overdrive and electromatic clutch are in good working order. It is also equipped with a heater, defroster and a power convertible top. All wheels and tires have been balanced, all fluids have been changed and the chassis has been thoroughly lubed.
With the sleek styling of the headlights moved into the fenders, along with modern brakes and suspension, this sporty five-passenger convertible coupe is powerful, sleek, reliable and truly worthy of the Packard legacy.
When traveling with the factory overdrive engaged, it cruises down the road smoothly and quietly at 65 miles per hour.
On a personal note from the dealer: I successfully completed a 640-mile, post-Amelia Island tour in south Florida in March of 2022 with this vehicle! The shutterstat worked well and the car ran cool, even in the hot Florida weather. I will attest to its reliability and road-worthiness and that it’s ready to be driven and shown anywhere.
