Here is a very desirable 2002 BMW Z3 M roadster equipped with the 315 hp S54 engine. These are fairly rare as only 1,565 such cars were produced for North America over two model years. What makes this example even more unique is the factory Steel Grey paint which represented less than 2% of M Roadster production; that comes to about 30 cars total! Throw in a black and gray leather interior and the number shrinks even further. But here is one of them.
This car shows just 29k miles. It has a very sporty look with the wide, flared rear fenders that really define the M version. The car also has the M bumper covers, trunk lid, gills, and fender / tail badging. The factory Chrome Shadow wheels are very sharp as well and wear Michelin Pilot Sport tires (225/45ZR17 front, 245/40ZR17 rear). The black power convertible top can transform the car in only a few seconds right from the driver’s seat. Modifications are limited to aftermarket muffler / tailpipe assemblies.
The engine is BMW’s S54 3.2L inline-6. This is the same engine as used in the E46 M3 model with a factory rating of 315 hp at 7,400 rpm. It loves to rev and really sings, while the 5-speed manual transmission and independent rear suspension deliver a true sports car experience. In typical BMW fashion, this car offers power assisted rack and pinion steering with excellent road feel. It also has power assisted 4-wheel disc brakes taken from the E36 M3.
The leather interior is more spacious than it appears with excellent sport bucket seats that each have power operation and a safety hoop. Everything is clean and uncluttered, befitting of such a sports car. The main instrument cluster contains the speedometer, tachometer, fuel gauge, and water temperature gauge. An auxiliary cluster picks up oil temperature, air temperature, and a clock. Controls consist of straightforward temperature / ventilation dials along with pushbuttons for the seat heaters, traction control, and air conditioning. There are also switches for the power windows and power top. An aftermarket sound system has been installed along with trunk mounted amplifiers.
The S54 Z3 M is not that old but has already proven to be a collectible performance car. It was one of the best sports cars of its day and really looks the part. This one demonstrates what it’s all about and is exceptionally rare as well.
