Vehicle Description
1996 Chevrolet Camaro Z28
The Chevrolet Camaro, manufactured by Chevrolet, was hardly a new
idea; more like a hurried attempt to keep up with the recently
launched/remarkably successful Ford Mustang. It started as a pony
car, but Chevrolet later introduced muscle car versions in the
market. Launched on September 29, 1966, the Camaro comes in five
distinct generations, with the last one being introduced on March
16, 2009.
This pristine example of a fourth generation Camaro has only a mere
63,520 consignor stated original miles clocked! A non "T" top
model, spicy red exterior and charcoal and gray interior
combination, and a hefty 8-cylinder LT1 Chevrolet engine, combine
to make beautiful speed from this clean Autocheck Vehicle History
Report Z28 right out of 1996. Used by our consignor as a spare show
car, winning 2 trophies, it's time to pass the flamed torch on as
space is at a premium in our consignors stable. Will you be the
next owner of this peppery Mustang muncher?
Exterior
This version of the sporty Camaro is bathed in spicy Cayenne Red
Metallic and has straight steel with well minded gaps throughout. A
neatly shaped front still retaining the throwback look from the
originals but with a much more aero twist. No chrome, just the
Cayenne Red and some black accenting around the grille and
headlights. Leaded back to the heavily raked windshield is a carbon
fiber wrapped hood with peppery scoops left in the original red.
T-tops were not optioned on the roof of this Z so we see a gloss
black roof in their place. The B pillars are also in black. Just
behind them is a nicely curved and long sloping greenhouse glass
that leads us right up to the rear spoiler which neatly curves with
the rear deck, and melts into the quarter panels. On back a rounded
tail with seamless taillights with the C A M A R O badge embossed
in the center of this rear panel. Snazzy saw blade style alloy
wheels are now on all 4 corners and wrapped with like new rubber.
The Cayenne Red Metallic paint is all looking very deep with very
few faults. Someone call for backup....we have a 3 alarmer
here!
Interior
A swing of the charcoal paneled sporty looking doors and we note
plenty of aero molded plastic and vinyl mixing with some suede
broadcloth and carpeting, a pull and some power function buttons,
and we are anxious to slip inside. Doing so we slip into nicely
shaped high back buckets that sport heavily padded bolsters
throughout. These are covered in two tone gray and charcoal
broadcloth and are looking not often used. In back a bench which is
basically 2 more buckets split apart by the long hump making its
way rearward. These are in excellent condition as well. More
beautifully molded and sculpted vinyl for the center console and
dash which both make use of the undulating line where nothing is
squared off, (gosh I'm glad the 80's styling is gone!). All clean
and good looking for the dash, instruments and charcoal carpeting
flooding the floors.
Drivetrain
A 350ci LT1 fuel injected V8 rated at 285hp, is backed by a 4L60E
4-speed automatic transmission. A 10-bolt rear axle with 3.42
gearing helps set the power in motion and leaves a stinging
sensation on its competitors. Keeping the occupants cool is a new
A/C compressor and dryer
Undercarriage
A light peppering of surface rust is seen on a few cast suspension
parts, but all unremarkable. Otherwise, stamped steel floor pans
and rockers with some light patina from age but no rust on these
items. Independent front suspension, and a torque arm with coil
springs are in back to provide the ride. Power disc brakes are all
around, and a clean single exhaust system with dual outlets gives
this engine plenty of pipe to exhale freely.
Drive-Ability
This car fired right up and on the test track performed as
expected, with all functions working. Having driven many a Camaro
here at Classic Auto Mall, I'd have to say I did notice this one
definitely provided a bite and a burning that others have failed to
duplicate. Let's just say that this Camaro comes packed with hot
haste!
A back up show car, carefully taken care of then safely put away
until the next outing. A powerful LT1 V8, faux carbon fiber, a
clean interior, the important Z28 RPO code, a consignor stated 64K
original miles all work together to put the peppery Camaro high up
on the Classic Auto Mall Scoville Unit chart.
