GM when it introduced the redesigned A-body platform with a shorter
112 wheelbase. Among the redesigned muscle car offerings was the
Buick's GS, which had already officially adopted the slang term
used to describe its Gran Sport on the street and strip. There were
actually three GS models offered during the 1968-'69 model years:
the California GS, the GS 350 and the GS 400 model featured here.
While the Skylark came badged as everything from Special Deluxe to
GS 400, it was only the Skylark Custom and GS 400 that were
available as convertibles. The GS 400 was Buick's muscle car
submission, designed to go head-to-head with the other
intermediates on the street; the Chevelle, GTO, 442 as well as the
Ford Fairlane and Mercury Comet; the Rambler Rebel; and the Dodge
and Plymouth B-bodies like Roadrunner, GTX, Super Bee, and Charger.
Visually, the GS 400 differed from the typical Buick look with its
more-restrained use of trim. The 1968 GS featured simulated air
extractors behind the front wheels and GS badges on both front
fenders slyly calling out this was not your typical grocery getter,
in fact it was the howitzer with windshield wipers, as Buick had
boasted in their ads for the Skylark Gran Sport back in 1965. The
GS 400 was the top of the performance heap for Buick with a
big-block, which was entering its sophomore season. Emerging from
the upscale division of GM, this unlikely muscle car was beginning
to garner attention on the street thanks in part to its
performance, which seemed somewhat underrated. The potential of
these subtle, undercover street warriors was easily enhanced with a
few select performance add-ons by Buick enthusiast in the know. The
Buick GS 400 Convertible featured here is a great value for the
muscle car enthusiasts. It has already been well established these
cars have great performance potential, and this car is largely
still in very original condition and the top goes down! This car
has a lot of potential miles of fun drives to the beach, cruising
the strip downtown or maybe a trip to the Pure Stock drags! The
older paint job has held up well for the most part but has some
small scratches, some chips and a couple bubbles throughout but
shows very well. The bumper chrome and stainless is good condition
and shines with a nice luster. A new top has recently been
professionally installed. The white interior in this car is largely
original and has been well maintained and presents well. A custom
center console houses a JVC stereo with AutoMeter Tachometer and
oil pressure gauge and power outlets for your phone and related
electronics. Custom kick panel speakers house the speakers.
Previous ownership retained the original kick panels and they come
with the car. An aftermarket cruise control has been added to
compliment the already loaded cache of options, which includes
power convertible top, power brakes, power steering and air
conditioning. The undercarriage of this Gran Sport is unrestored
but appears well maintained. Included with the car is a complete
set of new front and rear springs and a complete set of Monroe
shocks. The underbody has been lightly undercoated and is free of
any rust through. The frame is solid and rust free. Factory steel
wheels are wrapped in Hankook radial white wall tires with factory
wheel covers. Under the hood sits the 400 Buick V8 backed by a 400
THM 3 speed automatic transmission which is in overall original
condition with a newer GM HEI electronic ignition installed. It
appears well mainta
