READY TO ENJOY! Offering greater passenger room and cargo capacity
than the venerable Beetle with modern styling, Volkswagens Type
3-based Fastback and wagon-style Squareback sedans debuted in 1966
in North America. Retaining traditional VW values including
practicality and excellent fuel economy, plus the reliability and
ease of maintenance of their air-cooled engines, these new
Volkswagens captured new buyers as modern alternatives to the
beloved original Beetle. While clearly VW products with their
rear-mounted, air-cooled powertrains, the Fastback and Squareback
featured a new engine design, initially displacing 1500cc and
upsized to 1600cc by 1968. Sometimes referred to as the suitcase
engine due to its shape and dimensions, this powerplant design
resided below the rear cargo floor. Electronic fuel injection was
standard, beginning in 1969. A reorganization of VWs various model
lines came in 1971, with the Fastback now designated the Type 3
Fastback and the Squareback renamed 1600 Squareback. Production
continued until 1974 when the revolutionary new front-drive,
liquid-cooled Rabbit and Dasher arrived for 1975.Extremely rare
today in such wonderfully preserved, rust-free condition, this 1971
Volkswagen 1600 Squareback is a virtual time warp to the 1970s.
Reportedly an original California car, it comes with California
registration plates mounted with frames advertising the Jack Feely
VW dealership of Redlands, California, near San Bernardino.
Repainted in its originally specified tan paint finish, this
collector-worthy 1600 Squareback retains the original interior,
exceptionally well preserved with tan and black two-tone
upholstery. A 1600cc air-cooled flat-4 engine delivers 65
factory-rated horsepower in concert with a 4-speed manual transaxle
for a fun and sporty drive. Equipped with a desirable AM/FM radio,
this super clean VW classic includes a proper full-size spare tire,
plus desirable documents and records including the original window
sticker. Rare and exceptionally clean, this 1971 Volkswagen 1600
Squareback is quite likely one of the finest surviving examples in
existence and currently available. Freshly inspected and
professionally detailed, it is ready to own, collect, show, and
enjoy as the uncommon and enjoyable modern classic it is.
