Vehicle Description
This 1974 Volkswagen Thing is quite an affordable rare treat. So if
you like cool and classic VW culture, this is just The Thing.
Volkswagen's Type 181 really took the Beetle's rugged persona to
the max. The panels are ribbed for strength; there's a higher
off-road ground clearance; and the removable doors are
interchangeable front and rear for the ultimate in utility. The
windshield even folds down like a Jeep. In fact, while its full
history goes back to VW's initial German roots, the look of the
Thing is as fun and functional as a Willys Jeepster. This example
has some fun style with the white paint and tastefully contrasting
black rocker stripe. And the black convertible top and side
curtains coordinate for an almost two-tone style. The presentation
is quite complete but not perfect... because we never expect these
to be. The Thing was built for fun, and so we expect them to look
like adventurous driver quality cars. And they are also part of the
VW culture where the affordable price and parts availability allow
you to add your own personal flair. That's why this one is already
wearing an upgraded set of 15-inch alloys.
Just like the exterior, the interior is about rugged utility, and
so it's easy to have a carefree day while open to the world. As
many components as possible were shared with the Beetle, which
means the essentials are hardy and plentiful. This one also has
some nice upgrades like a sports steering wheel, cup holders, and
newer rubber floor mats. So it makes for a cool and easy
cruiser.
The real heart of the go anywhere at any time feeling comes from
the familiar 1600cc air-cooled VW motor. It's no surprise that the
Thing shares many components with the Beetle so it has a similar
reputation for a rugged drivetrain and easy maintenance. You'll
even spot some nice upgrades to keep this a strong runner, like the
full MSD ignition system. This motor is linked to the sturdy and
versatile four-speed manual transmission, which gives you firm
control of the powerhouse. It feels airy and nimble on the road.
You even have upgraded front disc brakes and modern cruising tires
afforded by the wheel upgrade. But this is truly built to be
capable when the pavement ends, too. The Thing's higher ground
clearance works nicely in conjunction with the ideal traction from
the rear-mounted engine, so there is true function within the
unique form.
Volkswagen only sold these to the USA for only a few years. So this
is a rare opportunity at a strong-running and highly authentic
example of a very cool VW. Call today!!!
