Chevy has been making pickup trucks since the '30s and when you
make a gazillion of them, well that's no small amount of practice.
Made to withstand all the punishment that a commercial vehicle
needs to tolerate, this 1996 Chevrolet C1500 Silverado pickup
appears to have led a very pampered existence. There can't be many
that are nicer, leading us to wonder if it's time for the Silverado
to become a genuine collector vehicle. With great looks, V8 power,
and plenty of bells and whistles, this OBS Chevy deserves your full
attention.
Dark monochrome paint jobs will always be in style, especially on a
pickup truck, and we have to admit that the Emerald Green Metallic
works especially well on the Chevy C/K series of trucks. Combined
with the regular cab and short bed, the Silverado has a sporty
demeanor and a great look. It's in outstanding condition thanks to
a recent repaint, with a brilliant shine, uniformed smoothness, and
a depth of clarity that GM paints from the '90s could hardly rival.
It isn't perfect of course, but it is clear that someone really
cared for this truck too spend some big money on the respray. There
was not much chrome fitted to these workhorses but what is there
remains in pretty great condition, including the commanding front
grille and both bumpers. And if you're actually going to put it to
work, you'll be happy to find a heavy-duty bed that's been
spray-lined with black bedliner material for protection.
A comfortable cloth bench seat makes this a first-class way to haul
your gear and the gray cloth upholstery looks nicely maintained,
showing only relatively minor signs of use near the high-traffic
areas. Because this is a Silverado it is optioned with all the
creature comforts, including air conditioning which still blows
cold, plus an aftermarket Kenwood AM/FM/CD/AUX stereo, cruise
control, power windows, power locks, and a tilt wheel are all at
your fingertips, further blurring the line between blue and white
collar transportation. And we haven't forgotten that this is a
truck with a half- ton load capacity and so power steering and
power front disc brakes make it all manageable. The dash pad has
made it through almost completely unscathed (save for one area
that's been somewhat poorly repaired) and the bright original
gauges, column shifter, and big leather-wrapped steering wheel all
provide a comfortable cockpit for the driver. Given the condition
of the interior, there's just no question the 125K mileage shown is
original.
The Silverado is equipped with the 5.0L V8 that's been fitted to
everything from Camaros to, well, pickup trucks. There's more than
enough power available if you choose to leave the motor bone stock
like this one, which practically looks like it just rolled out of
the showroom and still runs superbly. The 4-speed automatic
transmission w/overdrive is also performing without complaint and
there isn't a better transmission available to mate to with a V8;
after all, fuel mileage matters these days. Also take a look at the
clean and incredibly solid undercarriage, where you'll find no
secrets, thanks to a lifetime in a warm climate (it's never left
Texas), and again, it suggests that this truck has led a very good
life. Awesome 20-inch American Racing chrome wheels add some flash
to the short-bed pickup, endowing it with a sporty demeanor and it
carries staggered 245/40/20 front and 275/40/20 blackwall radials
for slammed look that really suits this truck perfectly.
This is a great-looking truck today, and if these become more
collectable in the future, we're pretty sure these handsome bed
