styling from the turn of the millennium? Volkswagen?s New Beetle,
Chrysler?s PT Cruiser and later, Chevrolet?s HHR are all examples
of this design. Here at MotoeXotica Classic Cars, we have a 2006
Chrysler PT Cruiser Touring Convertible. Made in Chrysler?s Toluca,
Mexico factory on July 29, 2005, this example was originally
destined for the Chicago, Illinois sales zone. At 10,855 miles, it
was resold at South County Chrysler in St. Louis, Missouri.
Finished in Inferno Red Crystal Pearlcoat (code QRH), it has a
contrasting Pebble Beige power-folding cloth top (code VHJ). The
car?s paint and trim are in overall excellent order. The bodywork
is straight and solid, the engine bay is extremely tidy and the
cargo area is in fine shape. The body-colored bumpers fit tightly
to the body. This Chrysler rolls on Goodyear Eagle LS radials, size
205/55R16 all around mounted on aluminum chrome-clad wheels. The
wheels and tires are all in very good order. Under the hood is a
2.4L DOHC four-cylinder turbocharged engine, code EDT/A855, has a
cast iron partially open deck block and split crankcase. It uses an
8.1:1 compression ratio with Mahle cast eutectic aluminum alloy
pistons, forged connecting rods with cracked caps and threaded-in 9
mm rod bolts, and a cast high-hardness steel crankshaft. The
cylinder head is cast aluminum, with the cylinder heads being a
48-degree pent-roof design with a partial cloverleaf between the
intake valves. The valves are actuated by hydraulically adjusted
rocker arms with roller cam followers. The intake manifold,
reverse-rotation turbocharger, jet oil coolers, oil pump, manual
transmission, special ecu tuning, intercooler size, and weight are
the only differences between those cars. The cast-aluminum
eight-row Valeo intercooler is mounted in the front, and the
reverse-rotation Mitsubishi TD04LR-16Gk turbocharger has a (one
square inch) turbine inlet. The turbocharger compressor housing
features a built-in bypass valve, and the turbo housing is cast
into the exhaust manifold with a loop-around flow pattern. Backing
this motor is a four-speed automatic transmission (code DGL/41TE)
with lock-up torque convertor. Driver convenience features include
air-conditioning, power steering, power disc brakes, keyless entry,
cruise control, power windows, power door locks, power sideview
mirrors and a tilt steering column. Safety equipment includes dual
front airbags, side airbags and anti-lock brakes. Inside, the car?s
Pastel Pebble Beige interior (code KA), looks showroom new with its
cloth, low-back buckets in front and a bench seat in back, matching
carpet and a four-spoke steering wheel. The inner door panels and
dashboard are all in the same condition. The console-mounted shift
lever, color keyed to the rest of the interior, is fine and a
factory AM/FM stereo with six-disc CD and MP3 players completes the
interior. Updates for 2006 included scalloped headlights, a revised
grille no longer extending below the "bumper", a new lower front
fascia which eliminated the patented brake cooling ducts and
redesigned taillights as well as available round fog lamps.
Interior updates included a revised interior with an updated dash
with an analog clock in the center stack. The audio system featured
a line-in jack for MP3 players integrated into the dash. Features
such as satellite radio, a premium sound system by Boston Acoustics
with external amplifier and subwoofer and UConnect hands-free
Bluetooth for compatible cell phones also became available in 2006.
The standard audio system now included an AM/FM stereo with
single-disc CD player and a 3.5-millimeter auxiliary audio input
jack with six speakers, replacing a cassette player and four
speakers. Convertible competition to this Chrysler in 2006 included
Audi?s TT Roadster, Chrysler?s own Sebring, Mazda?s Miata, the Mini
Cooper, Pontiac?s Solstice and Saturn?s Sky. If you are looking for
a fairly modern drop-top to day cruise with, leaf peep in the fall
or as a weekend getaway car, this one should be on your short list.
