Vehicle Description
Clean southern truck. Good body, floors, cab corners. Smooth
running 235 cubic inch inline-6 from a later vehicle. 12-volt
electrical system with alternator. New interior, upgraded steering
wheel, new tires, fresh chrome. Cool vintage Chevy ready to work or
play.Vintage pickup trucks are always a lot of fun-practical when
you need a little work done yet welcome at almost any car show
you'd care to attend. And few are hotter right now than Chevy's
Advance Design models. Built from 1948-1954, they have a smooth
1940s look, an honest sensibility, and bulletproof reliability. GM
was starting to realize that pickups were more than tools for
farmers, they were becoming transportation for a lot of Americans
looking to do a little work on the side, and the first all-new
post-war design nailed a perfect balance of work and comfort. The
styling is simple but instantly recognizable, with the horizontal
grille and rounded fenders, and the look has aged exceptionally
well. This particular truck has apparently lived most of its life
down south, so rust isn't really an issue and the bodywork shows
few signs of significant trauma or patchwork. Of note, the doors
fit well, the cab corners are excellent, and aside from a little
wrinkle on the right front fender, it wears the black paint quite
well. The finish is appropriate for a truck-not perfect but
perfectly presentably-and these trucks always look great in basic
black. The chrome grille and bumpers are recent so they really
sparkle and the bed is outfitted with beautiful stained oak planks
that really dress things up. No frills, but solid and ready to have
fun.The interior has been nicely dressed with a fresh brown vinyl
seat cover that's pleated to add a little bit of an upscale look.
There are black carpets on the floor, an upgrade over the original
rubber mat and someone has thoughtfully added a heel pad for
durability. The original steering column now wears a wood-rimmed
wheel that's a bit smaller than the original, but the truck remains
easy to handle on the roll. Aftermarket turn signals are a smart
addition and since this is a 3600, it has a 4-speed manual
transmission on the floor instead of the 3-on-the-tree of the 3100.
Big, round gauges keep an eye on the engine's vitals and they all
work except the fuel gauge, which is likely due to the 12-volt
conversion. There is no radio-they were still optional in 1950-but
there is an under-dash heater unit that might come in handy on
cooler nights. You'll probably find it easy to get comfortable
here.The engine is a desirable 235 cubic inch inline-6 from a later
Chevrolet, and with it comes full pressure oiling, insert rods, and
a number of other notable upgrades for reliability. It's nicely
dressed in corporate gray engine enamel and still inhales through
the original air cleaner and single-barrel carburetor. With the
electrical system upgrades you also get a new wiring harness,
faster starting, and a stronger spark, so it lights off quickly and
easily with just a little choke. And these sixes are legendary for
both their smoothness and their durability-you can barely feel it
running. Other neat details include tower hose clamps, an accessory
oil filter, and a remote reservoir for the upgraded dual master
cylinder under the floor. The 4-speed shifts neatly with easy
clutch action, and you'll probably find that you don't really need
first gear except for really slow going-just start off in second
and it'll be perfectly happy. It cruises easily at 45-50 MPH
without much effort, making a nice 6-cylinder grumble from the
single exhaust. Look around underneath and you'll also find new
brake components, modern tube shocks that really improve the ride,
and solid sheetmetal for the cab. Bright red wheels add some flash
against the gloss black bodywork and it wears 215/75/15 radials
that have less than 100 miles on them. This is not a perfect truck,
but it's a lot of fun, reasonably priced, and very attractive
inside and out. If you've been looking for an Advance Design pickup
that's the right combination of affordable, clean, and usable, this
might just be it. Take a closer look then give us a call!Harwood
