The 450 (4.5L) was the bigger of 2 engine options available on the “SL” which stands for “Sport Light” and first appeared in 1954 on the 300SL Gullwing. The 4.5L OHC engine is a fuel injected, 180hp, eight-cylinder with a cast iron block and aluminum heads that is capable of speeds in excess of 120 mph. Standard equipment on the 450SL included a convertible soft-top (blue), A/C, 4 wheel power disc brakes, power steering, power windows, power locks, cruise control, adjustable leather bucket seats (blue), tinted glass, fog lights, three speed wipers and a four speed automatic transmission.
