For Sale: 1917 Owen Magnetic Model O-36 in Saint Louis, Missouri
An exceedingly rare and fascinating early 'hybrid' automobile,
presented in completely unrestored condition, recently uncovered
from decades-long storage. One of the most expensive American cars
of its day, the Owen Magnetic was also nearly a century ahead of
its time, distinguished by an ingenious drive system utilizing a
Continental inline-six powering an electric generator which
supplies power to a variable speed magnetic drive transmission.
Much like the modern PHEV, the Owen Magnetic's gasoline engine was
not directly connected to the drive wheels. Due to the complexity
and high cost, fewer than 1,000 were produced between 1915 and
1920, and this remarkable, unrestored long-wheelbase Model O-36
Limousine represents a rare opportunity to acquire one of these
intriguing alternative propulsion motorcars. This incredible
machine is offered in as-discovered condition, with a seized engine
and requiring a full restoration, and is undoubtedly a unique and
gratifying challenge for the seasoned restorer. This vehicle
recently arrived and a full description is coming soon. Please
contact Hyman Ltd for more details. Offers welcome and trades
